CHAMUNDI HILLS

Mysore is surrounded by Chamundi Hills and atop these hills is the revered Sri Chamundeshwari Temple. In fact, the hills came to be known as Chamundi Hills after this temple was built here. The presiding deity is Durga who was also worshipped by the royal family of Mysore. She slayed the demons Mahishasura, Chanda and Munda and is believed to be an incarnation of Parvati, the consort of Shiva. Sri Chamundeshwari Temple attracts a large number of devotees from all over the country every year as people believe that a visit to this temple can fulfil their wishes.

NANDI TEMPLE

This giant image of Nandi (Bull) is located at the top of Chamundi hills in Mysore. More than 350 years old, this is one of the oldest icons in Mysore.According to Hindu mythology Nandi is considered as the vehicle (mount) of Lord Shiva, the lord of destruction. In front of every Shiva temple, on the court facing the shrine, you can see the image of a Nandi.About 16 feet in height and 24 feet long, this Nandi atop the Chamundi Hills is the third largest in India. The creation of this colossal image is attributed to Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar (1659–1673) on of the illustrious Maharajas of Mysore. It is the same maharaja who also commissioned the 1000 stepped stairway to the hilltop.

SAND MUSEUM

“Sand sculptures are commonly crafted for a brief display on beaches. What I have done in Mysore is a permanent museum of sand sculptures, protected from the sun and rain,” the artist explained. A 15-ft high sand statue of a Lord Ganesh welcomes visitors to the museum. Other sculptures include Goddess Chamundeshwari, Laughing Buddha, Dasara procession, the late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar seated on the throne during Dasara, zodiac wheel, a striking work of ‘Gitopadesha’ with Lord Krishna and Arjuna on a horse-drawn chariot, ancient civilization, marine life, Disneyland, Islamic culture, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and wildlife. Ms. Gowri explains: “I have entirely used only sand and water to craft the sculptures. I have also used glue in small proportions for sculpting vertical compositions.”

WAX MUSEUM  / MELODY WORLD

See over 100 life-size wax musicians in their original attire at Melody World Wax Museum, a specialty museum dedicated to musicians worldwide. Dressed in genuine clothing, the figures depict musicians specializing in Indian classical music styles from around the country, as well as international jazz, rock, and hip hop artists, displayed across 19 pavilions. The museum also boasts the largest collection of musical instruments in Karnataka, with over 300 items ranging from antiquated pieces to modern electronic instruments. Don’t miss the giant scupture of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, ruler of Mysore. KARANJI LAKE

The butterfly park is inside an island in the lake. The path through the park eventually takes you to that bridge to the island. This is home to about 4 dozen butterfly species. What attract the butterflies are the select plants that is grown in the island. Unlike the birds, it is a bit difficult to spot the many varieties of the butterflies. However still you can make out many groups of these flying creatures in the park.

MYSORE ZOO

Spread across 157 acres of land, the Mysore Zoo or the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in the country. Home to nearly 170 species of birds and animals, Mysore Zoo was initially only 10 acres. It was created by Maharaja Sri Chamaraja Woodeyar in 1892 and opened to the public in 1902. Mysore Zoo was expanded over the years and soon it became a prime tourist attraction the city. It completed 100 years in 1992 and its centenary celebrations included renovations and modifications in the zoo along with unveiling of the bust of the founder of the zoo, among other things.

MYSORE PALACE

One of the most popular attractions not just in Mysore or Karnataka but the whole of India, the Mysore Palace is second to the Taj Mahal when it comes to the number of tourists who visit it. Over 4 million people visit Mysore Palace annually to admire its grandeur and architecture. Even though Mysore is home to many other palaces, this one stands out for its remarkable structure. The palace is a prime tourist attraction and maintained by the Government of Karnataka. It is the residence of the Woodeyars, the royal family of Mysore who once ruled this princely state. His Highness Krishnarajendra Wadiyar IV built the Mysore Palace and it took 15 years to build the enormous structure.

JAGANMOHAN PALACE / ART GALLERY

The gallery also has the rare and valuable art collection made by Col. Scott, a British Army Officer, who served in the British Army that fought against Tippu Sultan. But this collection was shifted to Srirangapatna in 1950. The gallery also boasts of a collection of Gravure prints by Britsih Army officers showing details of the Mysore wars against HyderAli and Tipu Sultan. One hall has exclusively been used to display the exquisite works of the famous Kerala prince -painter, Raja Ravi Varma. His paintings depict various incidents from the epics and these paintings attract a huge number of visitors to the Art Gallery.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CHURCH

One of the oldest churches in Mysore, St Philomena’s Church is as much as a tourist attraction of the city as it is a religious place of worship. The church is over 200 years old and was constructed on the orders of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III who found it necessary to have a place of worship for the Christians settled in Mysore. As their number grew over the years, there was a need of a bigger church and that is how St Philomena’s Church replaced the older, smaller church. The foundation of this church was laid in 1833 by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and the floor plan of the church was designed like a cross.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN

Brindavan Gardens is one of the most beautiful gardens known for its symmetric design. Essentially a terrace garden, it is today visited by 2 million tourists every year for its captivating beauty. Brindavan Gardens are behind Krishnaraja Sagar dam site and spread over 60 acres. The garden was laid out in 1927 by the Department of Horticulture and was completed in 1932. It is shaped like a horseshoe and has three terraces. Since it is a tourist spot, you will find the garden decorated with ornamental plants like colorful Bougainvilleas, flower beds and fountains with colorful lighting. In fact, several tourists come to Brindavan Gardens in the evening to watch the light and water display. The musical and dancing fountain create a water ballet on musical notes and visitors can witness this spectacle from a viewing gallery created inside the garden.

Its most famous legacy though is the bastion of two great Deccan kings, Hyder Ali and his son, Tipu Sultan. Under Tipu Sultan, the Mysore kingdom reached the heights of its power and expanded aggressively across South India. A visit to present day Srirangapatna, which was the capital of this kingdom, will take visitors back in time to this glorious and bygone age.

RANGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE

Also known by the name of Sriranganathaswamy Temple, this Hindu temple doesn’t require detailed introduction. Ranganathaswamy Temple is an ancient temple and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. He is worshiped here in the form of Sri Ranganathaswamy. According to the thorough research of ASI, this temple dates back to 984 A.D. Its foundation was laid by a local priest and in the 12th century, the temple was further modified under the rule of the Hoysalas.

JUMA MASJID

Built during the reign of Tipu Sultan, Masjid-e-Ala is a mosque that needs no formal introduction. It is a popular pilgrimage site for the followers of Islam. It was erected in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture and is a huge crowd puller in Srirangapatna. Visitors from distant places throng to Mysore city and visit Srirangapatna to see this amazing grandeur of the foregone times.Masjid-e-Ala is known for its architecture. SRIRANGAPATNA FORT

Srirangapatna Fort doesn’t need any introduction. It is a remarkable monument in Srirangapatna in Karnataka. This huge structure was built in the mid-fourteenth century by Timanna Nayaka, a ruler of the Nayaka clan. This fort has served as the ruling seat of the different dynasties after Nayaka like the Wodeyars, Arcotiya Nawabs, Marathas, and Mughals. It was captured by the British for the treasury but they were unable to discover much.

TIPPU SUMMER PALACE

Daria Daulat Bagh is a well-known tourist destination in Karnataka. Located in Srirangapatna, this place was the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan who built this palace in the year 1784. It is known for its fine architecture. The grand structure stands in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture and is built using teakwood. People visit this palace and captivate its beauty through the lens of the camera.The interiors of the entire Daria Daulat Bagh are carved in a labyrinthine manner. NIMISHAMBA TEMPLE

Nimishamba Temple is a Hindu temple in Karnataka. It stands near Cauvery River and is dedicated to the Goddess Nimishamba,a form of Goddess Parvati. This temple was built over 850 years ago by a Wodeyar King Mummadi Krishnarajan. GUMBAS

This bird sanctuary is a home to roughly 170 species of avifauna that makes it a delight for the birdwatchers and Ornithologists.
