About Nanjangud 

Nanjangud officially known as Nanjanagudu is a City and Taluk in Mysore district in the Indian state of Karnataka. Nanjangud lies on the banks of the river Kapila (Kabini), 23 km from the city of Mysore. Nanjangud is famous for Srikanteshwara Temple. Nanjangud is also called “Dakshina Kashi” (southern Kashi).This city is also famous for a variety of banana grown in the region, the Nanjanagoodu rasabale.

Gopalaswamy Hills

Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, is a hill (betta in Kannada) located in the Gundlupete Taluk, Chamarajanagar district of the state of Karnataka, at a height of 1450m India and is extensively wooded. It is also the highest peak in the Bandipur National Park. It lies in the core area of the Bandipur National Park and is frequented by wild life including elephants. Dense fog predominates and covers the hills round the year and thus gets the prefix Himavad(in the language of Kannada) and the temple of Venugopalaswamy (Lord Krishna) gives the full name of Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta.

Bandipur

Bandipur National Park established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the south Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the highest tiger population in India. It is one of the premier Tiger Reserves in the country along with the adjoining Nagarhole national park. It was once a private hunting reserve for the Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore but has now been upgraded to Bandipur Tiger Reserve.Bandipur is known for its wildlife and has many types of biomes, but dry deciduous forest is dominant.

NANJANGUD TEMPLE

Nanjangud has been a major Shaiva centre for nearly a thousand years. Chola Kings in the 11th – 12th century are considered to have set in motion the construction of the temple with significant additions by the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara kings.This temple was later renovated by the Hoysala kings. The Wodeyar kings of Mysore made various grants to renovate the temple. Nanjangud is also known as Dakshina Kashi or Varanasi of the South.

GOPALASWAMY TEMPLE

This temple took shape in the 14th century and is dedicated to Lord Gopalaswamy / Krishna installed by the rishi / sage Agasthya. The idol is sculpted to perfection and the Lord is standing in a dancing pose with a flute in his hands. Simple yet grand the prabhavali/panel behind the idol has carvings of a tree, the Lords friends, his consorts Rukmini and Satyabhama, Cows and Cowherds. Another unique feature here is that throughout the year just above the door leading to the Sanctum Sanctorum cold-water drips constantly. The priest patiently narrates the legends associated with the place and sprinkles this water on the devotees.

About Mysore

Known as the city of palaces, Mysore is the second largest city in Karnataka and is located at the base of the Chamundi hills. With its glittering royal heritage, its monuments and its buildings, it has become one of the most famous tourist destinations of south India.Mysore is best known for its Dussehra celebrations. The palace is lit up and the idol of Chamundi, the family goddess of the Wodeyars (the former rulers) is taken out of the palace in a glittering procession of horses and elephants and dancers.

CHAMUNDI HILLS

The Chamundi Hills on the outskirts of Mysore city is another famous landmark of the city. A visitor can see these hills from a distance of about 8 to 10kms while driving to this city of Palaces from any direction. The Chamundi Hills is about 3km from the city. It is at a height of 1065 meters above sea leave and about 800 feet above Mysore city. On the top of the hill is the Chamundeshwari temple that dates back to the 11th century. Goddess Chamundeshwari is an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi who took this form to destroy the demon king Mahishasura.

SAND MUSEUM

India’s first Sand Sculpture Museum is in Mysore. It is a unique museum where one finds the heritage of Mysore crafted into sand. Located near Chamundi Hills, this Museum is worth a visit. It is incredible to note that these marvelous pieces of art were made using just sand and water. A giant 15 feet Ganesha statue right at the entrance is followed by variety of themes including Tom & Jerry, Mysore Kings, Chamundeswari Goddess, landscapes and animals. The sand sculpture museum takes you to another world for half an hour!

WAX MUSEUM

Mysore boasts of the Melody World Wax Museum among its many attractions. Marvel at the lifelike replicas of famous people. Take your picture with Mahatma Gandhi, or get up, close and personal with the Regents of Mysore! Different kinds of musical instruments and conferences with performers in traditional dress can also be seen here. Take a look at vintage telephones, boomerangs and musical instruments. Music lovers will be intrigued by the sheer variety of instruments on display. Children will enjoy looking at the life-sized wax figures, so be sure to drop in with your family for an entertaining and informative outing.

KARANJI LAKE

Originally part of the Mysore Zoo, Karainji lake (also called Karanjikere ) in Mysore City is a sprawling water body in with a beautiful park around it.On top of this natural habitat, the park has a giant aviary, possibly the largest in the country. Essentially this is a massive net enclosure as high as a tall tree. Visitors can walk through this and observe the birds closely. Inside the aviary you will find a great number of peacocks, wildfowls, geese etc.

MYSORE ZOO

The zoo not only had an excellent collection of animals, it has a beautiful bandstand and had a picturesque setting with the Chamundi hills as its backdrop and an artificial lake on its premises. After expansion the zoo in 1909 it was renamed Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens after its founder. When the Maharaja traveled abroad he selected rare animals from these countries and brought them back to add to the zoo’s collection. Sometime animals available in Mysore forest were exchanged for animals acquired from other countries. Mr. Herman Ruhe a German who owned a number of zoos in Germany was closely associated with the Mysore Zoo for about eight decades. The Maharaja also made the Mysore zoo an “orphanage” for raising abandoned animals.

MYSORE PALACE

Mysore is a city of palaces, but the most magnificent of them all is the Mysore Palace sometimes known as the Main Palace as well. One of the most unforgettable images of the city is the image of the illuminated Mysore Palace against the dark black sky. It takes ninety seven thousand light bulbs to produce this enchanting image of the Palace. The Palace is situated in the middle of the city and is a reminder of the grandeur of a bygone era and is today an invaluable national treasure.

JAGANMOHAN PALACE

The Jaganmohan Palace in Mysore is one of the oldest buildings in Mysore. This Palace is more that 150 years old. Like the Mysore Palace this Palace too is a beautiful and ornamental Palace built by the Kings of Mysore. In the 150 years of its existence this Palace has witnessed a number of important events that have been instrumental in shaping the destiny of the modern State of Mysore today known as Karnataka. This Palace was built in 1861 and was initially an ornate wooden one and was being used by the Royal family when a fire destroyed it in 1897.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CHURCH

The St. Philomena’s Church in Mysore is one of the oldest churches in India. It is over 200 years old. Initially over 250 years ago there was a small church in its place. When the capital of Mysore state was move from Srirangapatnam to Mysore city in 1799, many British officers and soldiers came and settled down in Mysore. The Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III realized the need for a Christian church for these people. So the Maharaja gave them a small plot of land on the Mysore-Bangalore Road and a little church came up there. As the city expanded and the Christian population of the city increased there was a need for a larger church.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN

One of the most visited places in Mysore by locals and by tourists is the famous Brindavan Gardens. Located about 19kms from the heart of Mysore these beautiful gardens are laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam built across the river Cauvery. These gardens are famous for the illuminated dancing fountains that come to life after sunset. The Krishnaraja Sagar Dam (KRS) (known as Kannambadi to the locals) itself is a superb example of excellent engineering and itself is a tourist attraction in Mysore. Sir M. Vishveswariah, one of India’s finest engineers, built it in 1924.
