EDAKKAL CAVES

Edakkal Caves were discovered by a Fred Fawcett in 1890. He was on a hunting trip when he came across a stone axe in a coffee estate that was used by a Neolithic Celt. Fred had a deep rooted interest in pre-History and wanted to explore more. He crossed the thick forests of Ambukuthy Mala to discover what later proved to be a dwelling dating back to the New Stone Age which was inhabited several times in the course of human history.The rock carvings here are of at least three distinct types, with the oldest one dating back to a period as long as 8,000 years ago.

WAYANAD HERITAGE MUSEUM

This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala. The museum houses fascinating items from tribal communities dating back to the second century AD. It has a rare collection of several ancient instruments & tribal artifacts like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, farming instruments, a fine collection of 14th – 16th century sculptures, etc. Ancient terra cottas, stone weapons and local art are also on display at the museum.

SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS

Soochipara Waterfalls is a 3 tiered waterfall, dropping from a height of about 200 meters. The waterfall cascades down into a large pool, which is a good place for swimming and bathing. The name Soochipara given from the words soochi means rock and para means needle. One can see needle-shaped rock here hence the name Soochipara. The water from Soochipara Falls later joins Chaliyar River after Vellarimala Hills near Cherambadi in Tamil Nadu.

JAIN TEMPLE

The architecture of the temple has strong influences of the then Vijayanagar architectural style. It was built with large granite pillars that are extensively carved. The temple is mostly plain from outside with few nice carvings in the inner section. There is a detached pillared mandapa on the front side of the temple without roof which is known as Namaskara mandapa. The main structure has a mukhamandapa followed by mahamandapa and the sanctum.

POOKOTE LAKE

The lake has abundance of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. Pethia pookodensis is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds and flies. The view of this vast expanse of water in the picturesque backdrop is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a path built around the lake, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The route between Kozhikode highway and Pookote Lake is lined with tall and thick vegetation which offers beautiful driving experience.

LAKKIDI (VIEW POINT)

This beautiful hill town has a number of scenic locations and enchanting viewpoints. Lakkidi Viewpoint is a popular viewpoint which offers dazzling views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys. Apart from Lakkidi Viewpoint, Pookote Lake is another popular attraction in Lakkidi. This is a natural fresh water lake, spread across 13 acres.At a distance of 16 km from Kalpetta & 4 km from Pookote Lake, Lakkidi is small hill station situated at the highest point in the Wayanad district. Located at an altitude of about 700 m, Lakkidi gets about 600 cm rainfall annually, making it one of the highest rainfall regions in Kerala and also one of the prime to visit.

CHAMUNDESWARI TEMPLE

At a distance of 13.5 Kms from Mysore Railway Station & 8.5 Kms from Mysore Zoo, Chamundi Hill is very famous for Chamundeswari temple dedicated to Goddess Chamundeswari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi who took this form to destroy Mahishasura. Also known as Krouncha Pitham, Chamundi Temple is one among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas representing the hair of Sati Devi and among the prime place to visit on a This is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Karnataka and one of the top places to visit in Mysore.

SAND MUSEUM

At the entrance of the museum, tourists will see a statue of Lord Ganesha, which has a height of 15 feet. Other sand sculptures at the museum are of Goddess Chamundeshwari, erstwhile Mysore King Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar who is shown seated on his throne during a Dasara festival, Lord Krishna and Arjuna on a horse-drawn chariot, Laughing Buddha, Christmas tree and Santa Claus, Disneyland, ancient Egypt, zodiac wheel, instances from Arabian nights, Tom & Jerry cartoon, etc.

WAX MUSEUM

This wax museum is consisted of 19 galleries with each gallery presenting a unique experience of the world of music and arts. An approximate of 300 musical instruments, both Indian instruments and western instruments have been displayed here.It also has about 110 life size wax statues. These wax statues and music instruments have been places in different settings of bands and stages. Some of the popular representations of bands are Indian Classical music such as Hindustani and Carnatic, Punjabi Bhangra, Middle East, Chinese, Tribal, Jazz, Hip Hop, Rock, etc.

KARANJI LAKE At a distance of 5 Kms from Mysore Railway Station & 2 Kms from Mysore Zoo, Karanji Lake is located at the bottom of the Chamundi Hill Road and behind Mysore Zoo. Karanji Lake (also called as Fountain Lake) is maintained by the Zoological department of Mysore and a huge fountain is installed inside the lake. It is spread over 90 acres and is home to more than 90 species of resident and migratory birds.This lake also has India’s largest and first walkthrough aviary and a butterfly garden. The butterfly park has been created on a small island within the Karanji Lake. About 45 species of butterflies have been identified here.

MYSORE ZOO

The zoo was originally 10 acres and has expanded to over 250 acres currently. Mysore Zoo provides shelter to large number of animal species. The Zoo is famous for breeding some very rare animals in captivity. It has a fine collection of animals like lions, tigers, hyena, deer, elephants, rhinos, king cobras and birds. The highlights of the zoo are Giraffees, Jaguars, African elephants and Wallaby.The zoo is very organized with a wonderful collection of animals and birds. The vegetation and landscape of the zoo are very well maintained.

MYSORE PALACE

Also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, it is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. The palace has three entrances, the East Gate, the South Entrance and the West Entrance. The entrance to the Mysore Palace is through the Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavillion that has a vast collection of dolls that belong to the early 19th and 20th centuries. This section also includes the wooden elephant Howdah which is adorned with 81 kg of gold. The seven canons that are situated in front of Gombe Thotti are used even today to mark the beginning and the end of Dasara festival.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN

Brindavan Gardens is a famous & beautiful garden laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam. The construction work of the garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932. This is one of the best tourist places to visit in Mysore.The garden was designed by Sir Mirza Ismail, Diwan of Mysore based on Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in the Mughal style. Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered as one of the best gardens in India. The garden is enriched with fountains, terraces, parterres, running and cascading water channels, lush green lawns & flower beds.
