About Mangalore

Mangalore is an important city in Karnataka and is situated on the west coast. After integration the city is developing fast in all directions viz. in the field of education, industry and commerce. The city is located in the confluence of Nethravathi and Gurupura rivers. It is bound in the east by the Western Ghats and in the west by the Arabian Sea. The Malayalam language variant of the same is Mangalapuram. One of the earliest references to this name is made by Pandya King Chettian, who called the city as Managalapuram in 715 AD. Yet another historical reference is by the 11th century Arabian traveler Ibn Batuta, whose chronicles refer to Mangalore as Manjarur. This variation in spelling is attributed to the pronunciation gap between and Arabic and the local language.

BEJAI MUSEUM

Bejai Museum is located at Bejai in the heart of the Mangalore. Often referred to as Seemanthi Bai Government Museum, it is the city’s only museum. Famed for providing a link between modern Indian history and the 16th century, the museum has collections of ancient and foreign coins. With coins belonging to British East India Company and Pakistan, and stylish paintings, the museum provides an insight into the Indian history and heritage.Named after the mother, Seemanthi Bai, of an officer, V.R. Mirajkar, of British Raj, the museum houses a wealth of metallic icons, statues, lamps and inscriptions made of copper. Copper inscription containing the verses of Keladi Venkatappa Nayaka, dating from 1624 AD is the highlight of the museum

KUDROLI TEMPLE

Kudroli Temple is a famous temple in the city of Mangalore dedicated to Gokarnanatheswara, another form of Lord Shiva. This is the only temple in Karnataka started by Narayana Guru, the famous social reformer from Kerala. It is one of the top places to visit in Mangalore city.This temple was built by a devotee called H. Koragappa in the year 1912 under the guidance of Narayana Guru. In 1991, the gopuram of the temple was renovated to Chola Gopuram style. The Shiva Linga is carved out of marble brought by Narayana Guru from Gokarna where he found it under water. The other deities worshipped here are Goddess Annapoorneshwari, Lord Bhairava and Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvathi.

TANNIRBAVI BEACH

Tannirbhavi Tree Park is set up in an area of 15 hectares near Tannirbhavi Beach. It is an initiate by Karnataka Forest Department. The Tree Park includes tree species found in the Western Ghats and also the trees/plants are herbal and have medical importance. It has various sculptures depicting the culture of the region — Tulu Nadu such as Yakshagana and Buta Kola.Tannirbhavi (also spelled as Tannirbavi) is one of the popular beaches in Mangalore city, and comes second in popularity to the nearby Panambur beach. Tannirbhavi beach has some basic facilities like life guards, proper toilets, a parking lot, a couple of small eateries and concrete benches.

MANGALADEVI TEMPLE

The Mangaladevi Temple is a Hindu temple at Bolara in the city of Mangalore in the South Indian state of Karnataka, situated about three km southwest of the city centre. The temple is dedicated to Hindu god Shakti in the form of Mangaladevi. The city of Mangalore is named after the presiding deity, Mangaladevi. The temple is of significant antiquity and is believed to have been built during the 9th century by Kundavarman, the most famous king of the Alupa dynasty during the 9th century under the aegies of Matsyendranath. As per another legend, the temple is believed to have been built by Parashurama, one of the ten avatars of Hindu god Vishnu and later expanded by Kundavarman.

KOLLUR MOOKAMBIKA TEMPLE

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvathi. According to Legend, Goddess Parvathi killed a demon called Kamsasuran who lived here and attempted to become powerful through his penance. Devi along with the help of Veerabadra, Ganesha and Shiva initially made him dumb and he came to be called Mookasuran (Mooka means dumb). Later the goddess killed him with her Chakra and called as Mookambika thereafter. The place where Devi killed Mookasura is known as Marana Katte.The Panchaloha (five metals) image of the Goddess Mookambika is stated to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya during his visit to this place. Devi Mookambika has three eyes and four arms, with chakra and conch in her hands sitting in the padmahasana posture. Mookambika is regarded as a manifestation of Shakti, Saraswathi and Mahalakshmi. Lord Shiva is also worshipped in this temple in the form of Lingam.

MURUDESHWAR TEMPLE

This temple is situated on a small hill called Kanduka Giri, bounded by the sea on three sides. The temple built with Chalukya and Kadamba sculptures in the Dravidian style. The temple is mainly built of granite. It has a 20-storey high Gopura guarded by two life-size concrete elephants at the steps leading into the temple. The tower is 249 feet tall and is considered the tallest Gopura in the world. The entire temple and temple complex, including the 249 feet tall Raja Gopura were constructed to its present form by businessman and philanthropist Mr.R.N. Shetty. The Murudeswar Temple is entirely modernized, with the exception of the sanctum sanctorum, which is still retains its original structure. In the sanctum, Lord Shiva graces in the form of Linga, 2 feet below the ground.

IDAGUNJI GANAPATI TEMPLE

Ganapati Temple at Idagunji is one of the famous temples in this region and among the popular places to visit near Murudeshwar.According to the legend, Lord Ganapati stayed in this place which was known as Kunjaranya. It is said to be a place of penance selected by ancient Rishis. The importance of Idagunji is mentioned in the Skandapurana. This place is located on the left bank of River Sharawati. This temple is one of the major pilgrimage centers in Dakshina Kannada and attracts more than 1 million devotees per year.Lord Vinayaka can be seen in standing posture at this temple, which is a rare sight. Vinayaka Chathurthi is the major festival celebrated here. Idagunji can be reached by bus from Honavar or Manki.

MURUDESHWAR BEACH

This is a splendid and clean beach surrounded by hills, the wide Arabian Sea on the west, coconut and areca groves close by, attracts tourists throughout the year. Murudeshwar offers magnificent natural views with serene and calm surroundings. One can come down to Murudeshwar beach for a great view of the sunset.Travellers can indulge in swimming, fishing and sunbathing at this beach. The waters here are cool and gentle waves for swimming, but strong currents do frequent the shores during high tides. Moreover, family boat ride or mechanized boat rides are also available. Handicraft articles made of special type of grass is unique and worth shopping here. Watch the huge statue of Shiva and Murudeshwar Temple from the beach is a spectacular sight.

About Udupi

One of the most popular legends about Udupi is about Kanakadasa, a great devotee of Lord Krishna who has turned away from the Lord’s temple. It is said that as Kanakdasa went to the back window of the temple to catch a glimpse of the Lord, the idol turned to face him. This temple today, known by the name of Kanakanakhindhi is a famous spot in Udupi. Udupi also houses the educational hub of Manipal which is thronged by students from India and abroad.

UDUPI SRI KRISHNA TEMPLE

The Krishna temple was founded by the Vaishnavite saint Shri Madhvacharya in the 13th century. This temple has a fascinating idol of Lord Krishna that is richly adorned with jewels & a famous golden chariot. The unique feature of this temple is that the Lord is worshipped only through a window with nine holes called the Navagraha Kitiki. The daily sevas and administration of the Mutt are managed by the Ashta Mathas.Saptotsava or the Seven Utsavas celebrated in mid of Jan are considered as the annual festival of Sri Krishna Temple. During the Paryaya festival, held every two years, the temple management is handed over to the next Matha. Krishnashtami, Raamanavami, Hanumajjayanthi, & Deepavali are other important festival here.

KAUP BEACH

Kaup Beach is a beautiful beach situated close to NH17 between Udupi & Mangalore. The light house situated on a hillock at the northern end of the beach is a beautiful sight to watch.The beach is a serene place with nature’s beauty in abundance. The 100 feet high light house was built by the British and it’s a photographer’s paradise. Kaup beach is covered by palm groves all the sides. Kaup is also known for the temple of Goddess Mariamma. There is also an ancient fort located in Kaup which is seen in ruins now. Kaup was once a famous Jain Kshetra and home for several Jain temples.

ST. MARY’S ISLAND

St. Mary’s Island is a group of small beautiful islands to the north of Malpe Beach near Udupi. It is said that Vasco da Gama first reached this Island before reaching the Kappad Beach (near Calicut) while finding sea route to India. The island has two beautiful beaches and crystallized basalt rock formations. The unique rock formations scattered through out the island giving a special landscape to the place. The rock formations are one of rarely found in the world. Eastern beach boasts of virgin sands, western beach is entirely made of sea shells. This unspoiled island is a very beautiful place with white sands, coconut trees, blue waters & pleasant atmosphere.

MALPE BEACH

Malpe Beach spread between Swarna Nandi River and Malpe Port is one of the finest beaches in Karnataka.Malpe is one of the most important ports of Karnataka. The endless stretch of golden sand, graciously swaying palm trees, the clear blue sky and the clean waters of Arabian Sea all set a perfect mood for an unforgettable holiday. Malpe Beach is characterized by silver white sand beach and rocky islands, which is still quite secluded and not visited by a lot of tourists. It is a great place for boating and swimming.
