About Mysore

Mysore, previously known as Mysuru, is the third largest and second most populated city of Karnataka. Situated right at the foot of Chamundi Hills, Mysore was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore. The rich cultural environment of Mysore has earned it the moniker of Cultural Capital of Karnataka.Mysore Dasara is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur for ten days and people from every corner of the globe visit this city during the festival. There are some notable heritage structures in Mysore like the famous Mysore Palace and the Jaganmohana Palace. Other significant tourist spots in Mysore include Somanthapura, Karanji Lake & Park, Chamundi Hill, Brindavan Garden and Rail Museum.

CHAMUNDI HILL TEMPLE

The temple tower is 40 meters high with 7 stories which is painted in gold color. There are several images of the goddess in different formns carved on outer walls of the temple. The doorway of the tower has a beautiful image of Ganesha. The main tower is followed by another tower which leads to the mahamandapa of the temple which has plain pillars followed by antarala and the sanctum. Most of the times, the pilgrims have to get a glimpse of the goddess from mahamandapa. Those who are performing special poojas are allowed into the Antarala area close to the deity.There is a colorful image of the Mahishasura situated on the summit of the Chamundi Hill. Well laid motorable road is available to the hill top near the temple. There are also one thousand steps from bottom for those who prefer to walk.

MYSORE PALACE

Also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, it is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. The palace has three entrances, the East Gate, the South Entrance and the West Entrance. The entrance to the Mysore Palace is through the Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavillion that has a vast collection of dolls that belong to the early 19th and 20th centuries. This section also includes the wooden elephant Howdah which is adorned with 81 kg of gold. The seven canons that are situated in front of Gombe Thotti are used even today to mark the beginning and the end of Dasara festival.

JAGAN MOHAN PALACE / JAYACHAMARAJENDRA ART GALLERY

The Palace is a three-storied structure constructed in traditional Hindu style of architecture. The original palace was extended in 1900 and an external facade with a hall was added to the existing structure of the palace. This new facade has three entrances. The walls of the interiors are painted with murals. These mural paintings which follow the traditional style of the Mysore school of painting depict the Dussehra scene and the canvas depicting the sequence of the Jumboo Savari stretches across three walls. A family tree of the Wodeyars tracing the lineage of the royal family is also painted on a wall. Two wooden displaying Dashavatara, the ten incarnations of the Lord Vishnu is also present in the palace. Until the completion of the main palace auditorium in 1912, the annual day and Dussehra festival celebrations were taken place here.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CATHEDRAL

The church is dedicated to 3rd century saint Philomena who was the daughter of the monarch of a small state in Greece. Her parents were childless for several years. They prayed Jesus to bless them with a child and the next year Philomena was born to them. Even in her childhood Philomena showed signs of piety. When Philomena was 13 years old her father took her to Rome to obtain the favour of Emperor Diocletian. The Emperor was enthralled by her beauty and wanted to marry her. But she refused and vowed to give herself to God. She was tortured and beheaded in Rome. But people’s devotion for her spread near and far and she was given sainthood.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN

The garden was designed by Sir Mirza Ismail, Diwan of Mysore based on Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in the Mughal style. Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered as one of the best gardens in India. The garden is enriched with fountains, terraces, parterres, running and cascading water channels, lush green lawns & flower beds.The Musical and dancing fountain, located in the North Brindavan Garden, is the main attraction of the garden. The best time to visit the gardens is after sunset when all the bright colourful fountains come alive. The garden also has a wonderful palace in southern park which is now converted to a 4-star luxery hotel called Royal Orchid.

MYSORE ZOO / JAYACHAMARAJENDRA ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS

The zoo was originally 10 acres and has expanded to over 250 acres currently. Mysore Zoo provides shelter to large number of animal species. The Zoo is famous for breeding some very rare animals in captivity. It has a fine collection of animals like lions, tigers, hyena, deer, elephants, rhinos, king cobras and birds. The highlights of the zoo are Giraffees, Jaguars, African elephants and Wallaby.The zoo is very organized with a wonderful collection of animals and birds. The vegetation and landscape of the zoo are very well maintained. The sightseeing starts with birds followed by Tiger, Cheetha, Gorilla, Rhino, Zeebra, Bear, Deer, Elephant, Jagurar, Lion, Ghoral, Reptiles, Hippo, Ostrich and ends with Giraffe.

SAND SCULPTURE MUSEUM

This Sand sculpture Museum is the brainchild of MN Gowri, one of the leading sand sculptors of India. A bachelor in fine arts, Gowri, took four months of hard work and unwavering dedication to create this unique museum. This eco-friendly attraction in the Mysore city is established over a spread of lush green area. Her journey into the world of sand sculpting began with at a festival which was organised at Suttur Mutt, Mysore by the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha. She had created a sand sculpture of Lord Shiva with Linga and snake for this festival.

WAX MUSEUM / MELODY WORLD

The Wax Museum at Mysore is aptly named as Melody World. The museum fascinates visitors through its display of various musical instruments in interesting settings, replete with life size wax statues of musicians playing the musical instruments. Since the museum is based on music and musical instruments it reflects the diverse kinds of musical instruments that have been in use across various parts of the country and the world since ancient times. This is a one-of-its kind wax museum in the whole world. The museum was established in October 2010 by a Bengaluru based IT professional named Shreeji Bhaskaran. It was created as a tribute to musicians from all over the world.

REGIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

The museum exhibits plants, animals and geology of the southern region of India. The galleries of the museum are presented under the divisions of Man and the Environment, Ecology, Life through the Ages, Biological Diversity, and Conservation for Development. The galleries emphasize the conservation of nature and natural resources while depicting ecological interrelationship among plants and animals.Visually challenged students can feel the exhibits of animals on the premises. The museum provides an extracurricular activity for schools and promotes environmental awareness. They also arrange film shows on topics related to natural history.

KARANJI LAKE

This lake boasts of having the largest walk-through aviary in India. This aviary, which was built with a cost of over 3.8 million, is 20 m high, 50 wide and is of 60 m length. This aviary at Karanji Lake has an artificial waterfall along with two other water bodies. The water in the aviary is pumped from Karanji Lake while the used water is pumped outside again into the lake.Another attractive feature of this lake is the Butterfly Park. This park has been built over a small island within the Karanji Lake. A must visit for nature lovers, this butterfly park boasts of more than 45 captivating species of butterflies. One can see various host plants and nectar plants which have been planted here to facilitate breeding and sustenance of butterflies. Some of these plants have been brought from various hill-stations.

About Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna is one of Karnataka’s most storied locations, a confluence of trade and culture from the heydays of the Vijaynagar Empire. Its most famous legacy though is the bastion of two great Deccan kings, Hyder Ali and his son, Tipu Sultan. Under Tipu Sultan, the Mysore kingdom reached the heights of its power and expanded aggressively across South India. A visit to present day Srirangapatna, which was the capital of this kingdom, will take visitors back in time to this glorious and bygone age.

SRIRANGAPATNA FORT

The fort was originally built in the year 1537 by Kempe Gowda. This Fort has four main entrances and has a double wall defense system, which is what makes it one of the toughest forts. Most of the fort was demolished by British during Fourth Mysore War in 1799.There is a monument in the fort in the place where Tipu Sultan was killed. The architectural style of the fort is supposed to be Indo-Islamic and there is a Persian inscription on the gateway that announces its date of construction. There are two dungeons in the lower chambers of the fort that were used to imprison captured British officers. Tipu’s residence was also housed within the Fort.

SRI RANGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE

Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the most important Vaishnavite shrines in South India. The temple is one of the Pancharanga Kshetras, other four being Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple of Srirangam, Sarangapani Temple of Kumbakonam, Appakudathan Temple of Trichy and the Parimala Ranganathaswamy Temple of Mayiladuthurai. Srirangapatna is also known as Aadi Rangam, Srirangam as Anthya Rangam and Sivasamudram in Karnataka as Madhyarangam.

DARIA DAULAT BAGH / TIPU SULTAN SUMMER PALACE

The palace was made with teakwood in Indo-Saracenic style. The pillars, walls, canopies, arches and the corridors are graced with several murals. They depict scenes of warfare by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan, the Nizams of Hyderabad, the British and French soldiers. The eastern wall has paintings representing the scenes of Darbars of different contemporaries of Tippu Sultan including the Hindu Rani of Chittor, the Raja of Tanjore, the Raja of Benares, Peshwas, etc.The Daria Daulat Bagh palace is now converted in a museum housing several of Tippu’s memorabilia. First floor of the palace houses sketches, drawings and paintings along with block prints and Tipu’s clothes.

GUMBAZ

The Gumbaz is designed in Islamic style, with a large rectangle shaped garden, having a path leading to the mausoleum. In the middle of the garden, the Gumbaz stands on an elevated platform, consists of a dome placed on a cubical structure with ornamental railings and turrets. The dome is supported by large black granite pillars.The importance of Gumbaz lies in its well-shaped large dome with ivory inlaid doors and carved stone windows of fine work and inscriptions. The doors of the tomb are beautifully carved and engraved with ivory works. The interior is painted in lacquer with the tiger stripe adopted by Tipu for military uniforms. The original carved doors of the mausoleum have been removed and are now displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The present door was gifted by Lord Dalhousie.

RANGANATHITTU BIRD SANCTUARY

The sanctuary comprises of six islets on the banks of the Kaveri River. It was declared in 1940 as a result of many requests from Dr Salim Ali who surveyed the birds in this area. Since then, the sanctuary has become a paradise for bird watchers. The sanctuary is a breeding ground for many migratory birds from all over the world. It is home to a wide species of birds including cormorants, darters, white ibis, spoon billed storks, open billed storks, painted storks, white necked storks, egrets, herons, terns, swallows, kingfishers, sandpiper etc.A boat ride takes you to the six islets crowded with a number of species of birds. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between June & October.
