BANASURA SAGAR DAM

The dam was built in 1979 under the Indian Banasura Sagar Project that was started with an aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro Electric Power Project. This project also aimed at contributing to the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the locals during the hot summer season. Banasura Sagar Dam is made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders. The reservoir is marked with a cluster of small islands which were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas during monsoon season. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill provide a mesmerizing sight to the tourists.

POOKODE LAKE

The lake has abundance of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. Pethia pookodensis is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds and flies. The view of this vast expanse of water in the picturesque backdrop is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a path built around the lake, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The route between Kozhikode highway and Pookote Lake is lined with tall and thick vegetation which offers beautiful driving experience.

LAKKIDI VIEW POINT

Lakkidi is also famous for the Chain Tree, which is a large ficus tree bounded by a chain. According to the myth, a British engineer, after many attempts, failed to create a passage through the forests of Wayanad. Then a tribal youth, Karinthandan, guided him in making the route. The engineer was reluctant to share the glory and hence he killed Karinthandan. Local people believe that later the soul of the tribal youth started haunting the travellers on this way and at last a priest chained the spirit to the tree.

EDAKKAL CAVES

The caves have two levels accessible though narrow iron steps. The lower chamber is around 18 feet long and 10 feet high. A small path from here leads to the upper chamber which is around 95 feet long and 18 feet high. These caves are natural rock formations which were formed by a large split in a huge rock. The stone walls in the upper chamber have several line drawings belonging to the Neolithic Age dating back to 6000 BC, the earliest drawings being 8000 years old. According to archaeologists, this place is one of the earliest centers of human habitation. There are few rock carvings from Bible that were carved recently near the entrance of the trek path.

WAYANAD HERITAGE MUSEUM

This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala. The museum houses fascinating items from tribal communities dating back to the second century AD. It has a rare collection of several ancient instruments & tribal artifacts like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, farming instruments, a fine collection of 14th – 16th century sculptures, etc. Ancient terra cottas, stone weapons and local art are also on display at the museum.A series of pictorial rock edicts referred to as Hero Stones, memorialize a bygone age of warriors. There is a fine figure of the Goddess of fertility, Urvara, also displayed here. Most of the artifacts are collected from the Wayanad and surrounding regions.

SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS

Soochipara Waterfalls is a 3 tiered waterfall, dropping from a height of about 200 meters. The waterfall cascades down into a large pool, which is a good place for swimming and bathing. The name Soochipara given from the words soochi means rock and para means needle. One can see needle-shaped rock here hence the name Soochipara. The water from Soochipara Falls later joins Chaliyar River after Vellarimala Hills near Cherambadi in Tamil Nadu.This waterfall, surrounded by dense green forest, is one of the best waterfalls in Wayanad. A 20 minute drive from Meppadi will take you to this splendid waterfall. Visitors have to trek down for about 2 km to reach the falls from the road point through well laid path. The trekking is of easy level, which takes about 30 minutes one way. There are high chances that visitors may get a glimpse of wildlife like Deer.

About Nagarhole

Nagarahole is named after Nagarahole (Cobra river in the local language, Kannada), a winding river which runs eastwards through its centre. Situated in the two districts of Mysore and Kodagu in the state of Karnataka.It was originally constituted into a sanctuary in the year 1955 covering an area of 258 sq. kms and subsequently enlarged to include the adjoining areas of Mysore district and now extends over an area of 643.39 sq. kms which was given the status of a National Park in 1983.

About Iruppu Falls

This waterfall is also known as Lakshmana teertha falls. En route to the Iruppu Falls in Karnataka you will come across the Rameshwara Temple, serene among the vibrant nature. The temple attracts a large number of pilgrims during Shivaratri. Nearest town for all amenities will be Srimangala.Irpu Rameshwara Temple This is a Ishwara temple but known as Irpu Rameshwara Temple built by Lord Rama and the Shiva Linga was consecrated by the Lord himself. Before you take a dip in the Lakshmana Teertha it is customary to pay your respect first at the Shiva temple.

IRUPPU FALLS

Also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls locally, Irupu Falls or Iruppu Falls is another popular attraction not to miss in Wayanad tour packages. It is formed by Lakshmana Tirtha, a stream originated in Brahmagiri Peaks and joins Kaveri River. According to the legend, Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana passed along the Brahmagiri range in search of Sita. When lord Rama asked his brother to get some drinking water, Lakshmana shot an arrow at the Brahmagiri hills and brought into being the river Lakshmana Tirtha.

NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK

Originally the forest area was the private hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. Nagarhole was converted into a sanctuary in the year 1955 covering an area of 258 sq. km and subsequently enlarged to include the adjoining areas of Mysore district and now extends over an area of 643 sq. km. Nagarhole got National Park status in 1988 and declared as 37th Project Tiger Reserve in 1999. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats Nilgiri sub-cluster of 6,000 Sq. km, including all of Nagarhole National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage for World Heritage Site status.
