CHAMUNDI HILL TEMPLE

Located at the top of Chamundi Hills, Chamundeshwari temple is one of most prominent temples in Mysore. Dedicated to the Goddess Chamundeshwari (Chamundi), deity of the Mysore Royal Family and Mysore as well, this temple is about 1000 steps from the foot of the hill. The goddess is seated on a lion, killing the demon with her ‘trishul’. With its impressive architecture, great historical significance and surrounded with nature’s serenity at the Chamundi hills, this temple is still known as a prominent temples in India, attracting not only devotees but tourists from everywhere who come to witness its unshakable grandeur.

SAND SCULPTURE MUSEUM

This Sand sculpture Museum is the brainchild of MN Gowri, one of the leading sand sculptors of India. A bachelor in fine arts, Gowri, took four months of hard work and unwavering dedication to create this unique museum. This eco-friendly attraction in the Mysore city is established over a spread of lush green area. Her journey into the world of sand sculpting began with at a festival which was organised at Suttur Mutt, Mysore by the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha. She had created a sand sculpture of Lord Shiva with Linga and snake for this festival.

WAX MUSEUM / MELODY WORLD

The Wax Museum at Mysore is aptly named as Melody World. The museum fascinates visitors through its display of various musical instruments in interesting settings, replete with life size wax statues of musicians playing the musical instruments. Since the museum is based on music and musical instruments it reflects the diverse kinds of musical instruments that have been in use across various parts of the country and the world since ancient times. This is a one-of-its kind wax museum in the whole world. The museum was established in October 2010 by a Bengaluru based IT professional named Shreeji Bhaskaran. It was created as a tribute to musicians from all over the world.

KARANJI LAKE

Karanji Lake is a lake located in the city of Mysore in the state of Karnataka, India. The lake is surrounded by a nature park consisting of a butterfly park and a walk-through aviary. This aviary is the biggest ‘walk-through aviary’ in India. There is also a museum, the Regional Museum of Natural History which is located on the banks of this lake. The total area of Karanji lake is 90 hectares. While waterspread area is about 55 hectares, the foreshore area measures about 35 hectares. Karanji lake is owned by the Mysore Zoo Authority. Mysore Zoo gets a revenue of an average of Rs. 50000 per day from ticket sales to enthusiasts who visit this lake.

Mysore Zoo (Now Mysuru Zoo) (officially the Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens) is a 157-acre (64 ha) zoo located near the palace in Mysore, India. It is one of the oldest and most popular zoos in India, and is home to a wide range of species (168). Mysore Zoo is one of the city’s most popular attractions.While mainly depending on entry fees for its financing, an adoption scheme introduced in the early 2000s has been a success. MYSORE PALACE

Ambavilas Palace otherwise known as the Mysore Palace is a historical palace and a royal residence at Mysore in the Indian State of Karnataka. It is the official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty and the seat of the Kingdom of Mysore. The palace is in the centre of Mysore, and faces the Chamundi Hills eastward. Mysore is commonly described as the ‘City of Palaces’, and there are seven palaces including this one; however, ‘Mysore Palace’ refers specifically to this one within the Old Fort.The land on which the palace now stands was originally known as puragiri (literally, citadel), and is now known as the Old Fort. Yaduraya built the first palace inside the Old Fort in the 14th century, which was demolished and constructed multiple times. The current structure was constructed between 1897 and 1912, after the Old Palace was burnt ablaze.Mysore Palace is now one of the most famous tourist attractions in India, after the Taj Mahal, with more than 6 million annual visitors.

Jaganmohan Palace is a palace in Mysore, in the princely city of Mysore, India. Its construction was completed in 1861 and was initially used by the Wodeyars,Kings Of Mysore as their home (when the present majestic Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas Palace) was under construction after the old palace turned into ashes owing to a fire accident). It is now converted into an art gallery and a function hall. The palace is one of the seven palaces of the royal city of Mysore and one of the most beautiful contributions of the Wodeyar Kings of the city during their regime. The royal family has innumerable contributions not only to Mysore but also to some of the most important present metropolitans like Bangalore.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CATHEDRALA

church at the same location was built in 1843 by Maharaja Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. An inscription which was there at the time of laying the foundation of the present church in 1933 states: “In the name of that only God – the universal Lord who creates, protects, and reigns over the universe of Light, the mundane world and the assemblage of all created lives – this church is built 1843 years after the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the Enlightenment of the World, as man”. In 1926, Sir T. Thumboo Chetty who was the Huzur Secretary to the Maharaja of Mysore, Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar obtained a relic of the Saint from Peter Pisani, Apostolic Delegate of the East Indies. This relic was handed over to Father Cochet who approached the king to assist him in constructing a church in honour of St. Philomena. The Maharaja of Mysore laid the foundation stone of the church on 28 October 1933. In his speech on the day of the inauguration, he said: “The new church will be strongly and securely built upon a double foundation Divine compassion and the eager gratitude of men.” The construction of the church was completed under Bishop Rene Feuga’s supervision

About Wayanad

Wayanad is a district located in the north-east region of the Indian state of Kerala, at the southernmost tip of the Deccan Plateau.It is known for its cool highland climate, misty peaks and its virgin forests. Wayanad also played a prominent role in the history of the subcontinent. It is often called the spice garden of the south, the land of paddy fields, and the home of the monsoons.Wayanad’s rich history stretches back to the Neolithic Age, with the Edakkal Caves being one of the oldest signs of human settlement to be discovered. The caves seem to have been inhabited by several human settlersover the course of time. Even though very little is known about these ancient settlers, the cave paintings at Edakkal, the burial sites discovered around the caves, and the ancient earthenware found within are proof of their existence.

EDAKKAL CAVES

Edakkal Caves are two natural caves at a remote location at Edakkal, 25 km (15.5 mi) from Kalpetta in the Wayanad district of Kerala in India’s Western Ghats. They lie 1,200 m (3,900 ft) above sea level on Ambukutty Mala, near an ancient trade route connecting the high mountains of Mysore to the ports of the Malabar coast. Inside the caves are pictorial writings believed to date to at least 6,000 BCE,from the Neolithic man, indicating the presence of a prehistoric civilization or settlement in this region.The Stone Age carvings of Edakkal are rare and are the only known examples from South India.The petroglyphs inside the cave are of at least three types. The oldest may date back to over 8,000 years. Evidences suggest that the Edakkal caves were inhabited several times at different points in history.

SOOCHIPARA WATER FALLS

Soochipara Falls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad, India. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen and montane forests. Locally referred to as Soochipara (“Soochi” meaning “Needle” and “Para” meaning “Rock”), the 15-20 minute drive from Meppadi to Sentinel Rock Waterfalls has views of a number of Wayanad’s tea estates.The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is 200 metres (656 feet) and offers a cliff face that is used for rock climbing.The water from Soochipara Falls.later joins Chulika River or popularly known as Chaliyar River after Velarimala Hills near Cherambadi (Tamil Nadu) in Kerala.Once people reach the parking area, they have to pass through a security check at the entrance where they make sure you don’t carry any plastic. It takes 10-15 minutes walk to the waterfalls and water flow is less during summer, which makes it easy to reach the rocks where water falls.

Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the Wayanad district in Kerala, South India. A major tourist destination in the district, Pookode is a natural freshwater lake nestling amid evergreen forests and mountain slopes at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level. It is 15 km away from Kalpetta. It is the smallest and highest freshwater lake in Kerala.Panamaram, the rivulet which ultimately becomes Kabani River, originates from the Pookode lake.It is spread across an area of 8.5 hectares and with a maximum depth of 6.5 metres.Lying 3 km south of Vythiri town, the lake is one of the most popular tourist spots in Wayanad.

BANASURA SAGAR DAM

The dam was built in 1979 under the Indian Banasura Sagar Project that was started with an aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro Electric Power Project. This project also aimed at contributing to the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the locals during the hot summer season. Banasura Sagar Dam is made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders. The reservoir is marked with a cluster of small islands which were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas during monsoon season. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill provide a mesmerizing sight to the tourists.About 1 km walk from the dam entrance will lead to the boating area which offers speed boating facility in the breathtaking backwaters of the dam. There are also Jeeps available that charge Rs. 100 per person to take visitors from entrance to the boating area. There is a small garden and children play area near the dam. This place is also famous for fish spa. Many people visit the place to go trekking at the Banasura Hill.

MEENMUTTY WATER FALL

The Meenmutty Waterfall is located in the middle of a lush, moist, tropical forest, off the Ooty Road, around 29 kilometers from Kalpetta in Wayanad district of Kerala. The largest and most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad, Meenmutty is a three-tiered fall. The water plunges down from about 300 meters in three stages, and all the three stages require separate treks. The path is quiet dangerous and tiresome.To enjoy the fabulous beauty of Meenmutty Falls, you need to trek for about three kilometers from the road. It is an ideal picnic spot but during the rains it becomes slithery. You have to walk through dense foliage to reach the edge of the falls. The hiking can be strenuous, with steep inclines and rocks to climb over. After reaching the edge, it is an easy but slippery climb down the smooth rocks to reach the water. Although, the climb is exhausting, it is well worth it.

KARLAD LAKE

Karlad lake is one of the beautiful lakes in Wayanad, situated in a place named Tariod, which is 16 km from Kalpetta. It is a place which is ideal for peace lovers, and especially for those who wanted to take a escape of relief from from a busy tourist spot. Spread over more than 7 acres of area, Karlad lake is said to be the second largest freshwater lake in Wayanad and also a well-known picnic spot with boating facility.Zip-Line experience in Karlad is one of the best you can get in the Wayanad area.
