About Mysore

Mysore, previously known as Mysuru, is the third largest and second most populated city of Karnataka. Situated right at the foot of Chamundi Hills, Mysore was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore. The rich cultural environment of Mysore has earned it the moniker of Cultural Capital of Karnataka.Mysore Dasara is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur for ten days and people from every corner of the globe visit this city during the festival. There are some notable heritage structures in Mysore like the famous Mysore Palace and the Jaganmohana Palace. CHAMUNDI HILL TEMPLE

The temple tower is 40 meters high with 7 stories which is painted in gold color. There are several images of the goddess in different formns carved on outer walls of the temple. The doorway of the tower has a beautiful image of Ganesha. The main tower is followed by another tower which leads to the mahamandapa of the temple which has plain pillars followed by antarala and the sanctum. Most of the times, the pilgrims have to get a glimpse of the goddess from mahamandapa. Those who are performing special poojas are allowed into the Antarala area close to the deity.There is a colorful image of the Mahishasura situated on the summit of the Chamundi Hill. Well laid motorable road is available to the hill top near the temple. There are also one thousand steps from bottom for those who prefer to walk.

MYSORE PALACE

Also known as the Amba Vilas Palace, it is a treasure house of exquisite carvings and works of art from all over the world. The palace has three entrances, the East Gate, the South Entrance and the West Entrance. The entrance to the Mysore Palace is through the Gombe Thotti or the Doll’s Pavillion that has a vast collection of dolls that belong to the early 19th and 20th centuries. This section also includes the wooden elephant Howdah which is adorned with 81 kg of gold. The seven canons that are situated in front of Gombe Thotti are used even today to mark the beginning and the end of Dasara festival.

JAGAN MOHAN PALACE / JAYACHAMARAJENDRA ART GALLERY

The Palace is a three-storied structure constructed in traditional Hindu style of architecture. The original palace was extended in 1900 and an external facade with a hall was added to the existing structure of the palace. This new facade has three entrances. The walls of the interiors are painted with murals. These mural paintings which follow the traditional style of the Mysore school of painting depict the Dussehra scene and the canvas depicting the sequence of the Jumboo Savari stretches across three walls. A family tree of the Wodeyars tracing the lineage of the royal family is also painted on a wall. Two wooden displaying Dashavatara, the ten incarnations of the Lord Vishnu is also present in the palace. Until the completion of the main palace auditorium in 1912, the annual day and Dussehra festival celebrations were taken place here.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CATHEDRAL

The church is dedicated to 3rd century saint Philomena who was the daughter of the monarch of a small state in Greece. Her parents were childless for several years. They prayed Jesus to bless them with a child and the next year Philomena was born to them. Even in her childhood Philomena showed signs of piety. When Philomena was 13 years old her father took her to Rome to obtain the favour of Emperor Diocletian. The Emperor was enthralled by her beauty and wanted to marry her. But she refused and vowed to give herself to God. She was tortured and beheaded in Rome. But people’s devotion for her spread near and far and she was given sainthood.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN

The garden was designed by Sir Mirza Ismail, Diwan of Mysore based on Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in the Mughal style. Spread over an area of 150 acres, the Brindavan Gardens is considered as one of the best gardens in India. The garden is enriched with fountains, terraces, parterres, running and cascading water channels, lush green lawns & flower beds.The Musical and dancing fountain, located in the North Brindavan Garden, is the main attraction of the garden. The best time to visit the gardens is after sunset when all the bright colourful fountains come alive. The garden also has a wonderful palace in southern park which is now converted to a 4-star luxery hotel called Royal Orchid.

EDAKKAL CAVES

The caves have two levels accessible though narrow iron steps. The lower chamber is around 18 feet long and 10 feet high. A small path from here leads to the upper chamber which is around 95 feet long and 18 feet high. These caves are natural rock formations which were formed by a large split in a huge rock. The stone walls in the upper chamber have several line drawings belonging to the Neolithic Age dating back to 6000 BC, the earliest drawings being 8000 years old. According to archaeologists, this place is one of the earliest centers of human habitation. There are few rock carvings from Bible that were carved recently near the entrance of the trek path.

WAYANAD HERITAGE MUSEUM

This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala. The museum houses fascinating items from tribal communities dating back to the second century AD. It has a rare collection of several ancient instruments & tribal artifacts like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, farming instruments, a fine collection of 14th – 16th century sculptures, etc. Ancient terra cottas, stone weapons and local art are also on display at the museum.A series of pictorial rock edicts referred to as Hero Stones, memorialize a bygone age of warriors. There is a fine figure of the Goddess of fertility, Urvara, also displayed here. Most of the artifacts are collected from the Wayanad and surrounding regions.

SOOCHIPARA WATERFALLS

Soochipara Waterfalls is a 3 tiered waterfall, dropping from a height of about 200 meters. The waterfall cascades down into a large pool, which is a good place for swimming and bathing. The name Soochipara given from the words soochi means rock and para means needle. One can see needle-shaped rock here hence the name Soochipara. The water from Soochipara Falls later joins Chaliyar River after Vellarimala Hills near Cherambadi in Tamil Nadu.This waterfall, surrounded by dense green forest, is one of the best waterfalls in Wayanad. A 20 minute drive from Meppadi will take you to this splendid waterfall. Visitors have to trek down for about 2 km to reach the falls from the road point through well laid path. The trekking is of easy level, which takes about 30 minutes one way. There are high chances that visitors may get a glimpse of wildlife like Deer.

BANASURA SAGAR DAM

The dam was built in 1979 under the Indian Banasura Sagar Project that was started with an aim of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro Electric Power Project. This project also aimed at contributing to the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the locals during the hot summer season. Banasura Sagar Dam is made up of massive stacks of stones and boulders. The reservoir is marked with a cluster of small islands which were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas during monsoon season. These islands with the background of the Banasura hill provide a mesmerizing sight to the tourists.

MEENMUTTY WATERFALLS

The Meenmutty Waterfall is located in the middle of a lush, moist, tropical forest, off the Ooty Road, around 29 kilometers from Kalpetta in Wayanad district of Kerala. The largest and most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad, Meenmutty is a three-tiered fall. The water plunges down from about 300 meters in three stages, and all the three stages require separate treks. The path is quiet dangerous and tiresome.To enjoy the fabulous beauty of Meenmutty Falls, you need to trek for about three kilometers from the road. It is an ideal picnic spot but during the rains it becomes slithery. You have to walk through dense foliage to reach the edge of the falls. The hiking can be strenuous, with steep inclines and rocks to climb over. After reaching the edge, it is an easy but slippery climb down the smooth rocks to reach the water. Although, the climb is exhausting, it is well worth it.

POOKODE LAKE

The lake has abundance of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. Pethia pookodensis is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds and flies. The view of this vast expanse of water in the picturesque backdrop is breathtakingly beautiful. There is a path built around the lake, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The route between Kozhikode highway and Pookote Lake is lined with tall and thick vegetation which offers beautiful driving experience.

LAKKIDI VIEW POINT

Lakkidi is also famous for the Chain Tree, which is a large ficus tree bounded by a chain. According to the myth, a British engineer, after many attempts, failed to create a passage through the forests of Wayanad. Then a tribal youth, Karinthandan, guided him in making the route. The engineer was reluctant to share the glory and hence he killed Karinthandan. Local people believe that later the soul of the tribal youth started haunting the travellers on this way and at last a priest chained the spirit to the tree.

THIRUNELLI TEMPLE

The temple has an interesting legend behind. While travelling around the world, Lord Brahma came across a beautiful place now known to be Brahmagiri hills. Getting attracted to the beauty of the hills, he descended there and noticed an idol resting on an Amla (Gooseberry) tree. He recognized the idol as Lord Vishnu himself and with the help of the other Devas, he installed the idol there. On Brahma’s request, Lord Vishnu promised that the water around the temple will wash away all sins and thus the stream Papanashini originated, destroying all the sins. The temple got its name from Nelli means Amla (Gooseberry) and came to be known as Thirunelli.

KURUVADWEEP / KURUVA ISLAND

Kuruvadweep or Kuruva Island comprises of a cluster of islets over the middle of Kabini River in Wayanad that is popular for the boat rides it offers on specially crafted bamboo rafts. Spread over 950 acres of land, Kuruva Island, is popular for its diverse flora and fauna. These islands contain two small fresh water lakes. They are also a known safe haven for migratory birds along with hornbills, parrots and many butterfly species.Nature lovers throng to this remote destination in large numbers. Trekking enthusiasts will find some of the most beautiful and natural trails here. Massive trees situated next to the river are perfect picnic spots. The surrounding streams are ideal for a boat ride or rafting while enjoying the enchanting beauty of the island.

THOLPETTY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary or Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful destination located 20 km east of Mananthavady on the Kodagu Road. The jeep ride here offers brilliant opportunities to view various animal and bird species in their natural habitat. One gets to see herds of elephants, guars, deer, monkeys, tigers, leopards, bears and many species of reptiles, fishes, butterflies and birds including vultures.
