About Warangal

Warangal was the capital of the Kakatiya kingdom which ruled between 12th and 14th century. Prola Raja of Kakatiya is credited with built the town in the 12th century. The Kakatiyas, who ruled for more than 200 years, have left many grand monuments and architectural marvels like the famous Warangal Fort, Swayambhu Temple and many other ancient structures. In February 2013, Warangal was accorded World Heritage city status by UNESCO. Government of India’s Tourism Ministry also recognized the city as the Best Heritage City along with Jaipur.

JAIN TEMPLE – KOLANUPAKA

This temple has three main idols of Gods, called as Tirthankars. These are of Lord Rishabha, Lord Neminath and Lord Mahavir. The statue of Lord Mahavir has been made out a single jade and is about 140 cm in height. The statue of Lord Rishabha, who is also known as Lord Adinath, has been carved out of a green stone. Historically, it has been popular as Manikya Swami. There are eight idols of various other Tirthankaras, placed on both sides of the temple. Every Tirthankara has been built with their own unique style. The statue of Lord Mahavira has been carved with an image of Lion, while there is a bull on the pedestals of Lord Rishabha. A cobra with multi heads has been carved as an umbrella over the statue of Lord Parshawnath.

SRI SOMESWARA TEMPLE – KOLANUPAKA

Sri Someswara Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kolanupaka village in Nalgonda District.This temple is also called as Veyi Lingala Gudi (Thousand Lingas Temple).The temple was built around 12th century by Kakatiya Kings. Here Lord Shiva is found in human form unlike the common Linga form. Poojas are still being performed in this temple.The temple complex also houses the Archeological Museum with sereral hundreds of wonderful sculptures dating back to 10th century to 14th century found in this region.The temple is situated at a distance of 1.5 Km from Kolanupaka Bus Station (past Veeranarayana Temple) and 2 Kms from Jain Temple.

THOUSAND PILLAR TEMPLE

Rudra Deva built this temple in 1163 AD in the style of star shaped Chalukyan temples and named after him as Sri Rudreshwara Swamy Temple, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Separate shires for Lord Surya & Lord Vishnu in the temple are connected to main shrine by a square mandap in the centre. A beautifully carved giant Nandi (bull) is seen on the platform connecting the shrines. The exterior wall of the temple, the ceiling slabs and the four central pillars of the mandap are decorated with finely carved sculptures. Poojas are still performed.The actual thousand pillar hall situated behind Nandi in the temple complex is currently being renovated by the archelogical department and closed for visitors.

WARANGAL FORT

Warangal Fort was built by Kakatiyas in 12th Century AD. The King Rudradeva started construction of this Fort when the capital was shifted from Hanamankonda. It was further extended by his nephew, Ganapati Deva and was finally completed by Princess Rani Rudrama Devi. The fort was mostly destroyed by invaders and only the ruins can be seen now.Most of the fort is filled with settlements and small area in the center of fort has Open Air Museum with architectural remains of Kakatiyas. The famous stone gateways (called Kirti Toranas) are situated here, about 30 feet high and still standing, a masterpiece carved from a single rock.The Shambhulingeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is opposite to Open Air Museum.

BHADRA KALI TEMPLE

Bhadra Kali Temple is situated on top a hillock towards Hanamkonda. This temple is famous for 2.7 meter stone idol of the deity with eight arms and a weapon in each hand, in sitting posture. This deity is believed to be worshipped by the Chalukyan ruler Pulakesin-II in the year 625 AD.The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali, found in peaceful mood. This temple is located on the banks of Bhadrakali Lake. There is a park adjacent to the temple along Bhadrakali Lake which also has a shrine for Lord Siva in the form of Sri Chandra Mouleeswara.Brahmotsavas are held every year in the month of April/May in a grand manner. The festival attracts thousands of devotees from all over the region of Telangana.

RAMAPPA TEMPLE / RAMALINGESWARA TEMPLE

The temple stands on a 6 feet high star-shaped platform. The sand stone temple is crowned with a grand sikhara and is surrounded by pradakshina patha. The Ramalingeswara Temple consists of garbhagriha, large ranga mandapa and a mukha mandapa. At the entrance of the temple, we can find a large Nandi mandapa. An imposing 9 feet Nandi statue is quite famous here. The corners of the ceiling at all 3 entrances have total of 12 sculptures of madanikas marvelously carved in different poses, which are the main attraction of the temple. The figures of madanikas made from black granite with metal like finishing resembles the famous sculptures of Belur Cennakesava Temple.

LAKNAVARAM LAKE

Built by Kakatiyas in 13th century, this is the largest lake in Warangal district. It still provides irrigation water for over 50,000 acres of land. The magnificent lake is surrounded by thick forests of Eturnagaram Sanctuary. The suspension bridge across the lake is a special attraction.Laknavaram is one of the best places to visit around Warangal and it’s a perfect getaway to spend time with family. Boating facility is available in the lake on speed boats and motor boats. Telangana Tourism provides accommodation facilities along with a restaurant on the island in middle of the lake. Post monsoon is the best season the best season to visit this place when the lake is filled with water and the surrounding hills are covered with thick vegetation.

CHARMINAR

Charminar is constructed in Indo-Islamic architecture. Marble, limestone, mortar and granite are used in the construction of this grand structure. This is a two-storied building. The balconies on this floor provide a great view of the surrounding areas and the dome of the monument. This is a square structure measuring 31.95 m on each side with imposing arches spanning a distance of 11 m. A row of small vaulted niches ornament each of the four arches. The four minarets are three storied structured rising to a height of 56 m. The spiral staircase inside the minarets has 149 steps leading to the top. The ornamental arches on the minarets add to the aesthetic value. The notable feature of Charminar is the location of a mosque with an open courtyard on the second floor. This is usually closed for general public visit.

CHOWMAHALLA PALACE

Chowmahalla Palace is a blend of many architectural styles and influences. The palace is a replica of the Shah’s Palace in Teheran, Iran. It consists of two courtyards, southern courtyard and northern courtyard adorned with lawn and fountains. The northern courtyard has been restored and is now open to the public. This courtyard consists of Bara Imam and Shishe-Alat has many Mughal domes and arches adorned with stucco ornamentation. The Southern courtyard, the oldest part of Chowmahalla Palace, consists of Afzal Mahal, Mahtab Mahal, Tahniyat Mahal and Aftab Mahal. Of these the Aftab Mahal is the grandest of them all and is a two storied building with a European facade of Corinthian columns and a parapet without pediment.

SALAR JUNG MUSEUM

There are 38 galleries in the Museum spread across three buildings- Central Block, Eastern Block and Western Block on two floors. The collection of the museum and the library were transferred from Diwan Deodi to the new building in the year 1968 and two more buildings were added in the year 2000. The Veiled Rebecca made with Italian marble is one of the main attractions of the museum including Musical Clock, Marguerite & Mephistopheles and Ivory Room.

LUMBINI PARK

The Lumbini Park has become an ideal place of relaxation and a place of amusement. The key features of the park are the fantastic floral clock, the cascading artificial waterfalls and the dancing musical fountains. The Park offers the opportunity to watch one of the greatest laser shows currently happening in India. The laser show attracts thousands of visitors every year to the park. There is also a musical fountain in which the water from the synchronized fountains is released in accordance with the popular Telugu and Hindi tunes being played. The giant clock at the entrance of the park has been designed using various kinds of seasonal flowering plants, wide variety of cacti and rocks.

BUDDHA STATUE

During his visit to New York, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao (1983-89) saw the Statue of Liberty and inspired to build a similar structure of Gautama Buddha in the famous Hussain Sagar Lake. Erected as part of the Buddha Poornima project in 1985, this monolithic statue was erected out of a white granite rock. It was carved by 200 sculptors for two years. After 5 years and the expenditure of $3 million, the statue stood at 58 feet and weighed 350 tons, making it the world’s tallest monolithic statue of the Buddha. A concrete platform measuring 14 feet, now referred to as the Rock of Gibraltar, was constructed in the middle of Hussain Sagar to aid in erecting the statue.

GOLKONDA / GOLCONDA FORT

The word ‘Golconda’ originated from Golla Konda which stands for Shepherd’s Hill in Telugu. Golconda Fort was first constructed as a mud fort by the rulers of Kakatiya Dynasty in the 13th century. The fort was rebuilt and strengthened by Pratapa Rudra of the Kakatiyas. It was further strengthened by the Musunuri Nayaks, who defeated the Tughlaq army occupying Warangal. The fort was ceded to the Bahmani Sultanate as part of the treaty in 1364. It was later re-built with granite by initial Qutub Shahi kings, which took about 62 years to complete. Golconda Fort was under the control of Qutub Shahis from 1518 AD to 1687 AD. The fort finally fell into ruins after the siege of Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb in 1687.

QUTUB SHAHI TOMBS

There are more than 30 tombs in the enclosure besides some open air tombs. The tombs vary in size from small to large. The tombs are domed structures built on a square base surrounded by pointed arches, each tomb are quadrangular and rise from 9 to 15 meter above the platform. In the center of each tomb is a sarcophagus which overlies the actual burial vault in a crypt below. The domed structure originally overlaid with blue and green tiles, of which only some remain today. Almost all the tombs are surrounded by baluster with beautiful minarets at the corners.

AP STATE MUSEUM

Built in 1928 by the Nizam VII, the museum building itself is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, wanted to preserve the cultural heritage of the state and also took steps to extend the treasure trove act of the British ruled dominions to his state and also created the Department of Archaeology under the stewardship of Dr. Ghulam Yuzdani in 1915. From then onwards the department played an active role and conducted several extensive explorations and excavations.The museum contains a Buddhist gallery, Brahmanical & Jain gallery, Bronze gallery, Arms & Armour gallery, Numismatics gallery, Ajanta gallery and more. Adjacent to the State Museum is the Contemporary Art Museum.

BIRLA TEMPLE

This temple is a wonderful blend of Nagara and South Indian temple architecture. A Rajagopuram built in the South Indian style greets the visitors. The tower over the main shrine of Lord Venkateshwara called the Jagadananda Vimana is built in Dravidian style, while the towers over the shrines of the consorts are built in the South Indian style. The granite image of the presiding deity is about 11 ft tall and a carved lotus forms an umbrella for this image. In the inner shrine of the temple is a replica of the Venkateshwara temple at Tirupati. The brass flagstaff of the temple reaches to a staggering height of 42 ft. Mythological scenes from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are finely sculpted in marble.
