MANGALADEVI TEMPLE

Mangaladevi Temple is situated in Bolar. The word Mangalore is derived from Goddess Mangaladevi, the main deity of the temple. The temple was built in the memory of Princess of Malabar Mangale in 9th century. It is one of the top places to visit in Mangalore.Mangaladevi temple has rich heritage and historical significance. KUDROLI TEMPLE

Kudroli Temple is a famous temple in the city of Mangalore dedicated to Gokarnanatheswara, another form of Lord Shiva. This is the only temple in Karnataka started by Narayana Guru, the famous social reformer from Kerala. It is one of the top places to visit in Mangalore city.This temple was built by a devotee called H. Koragappa in the year 1912 under the guidance of Narayana Guru. In 1991, the gopuram of the temple was renovated to Chola Gopuram style. The Shiva Linga is carved out of marble brought by Narayana Guru from Gokarna where he found it under water. The other deities worshipped here are Goddess Annapoorneshwari, Lord Bhairava and Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvathi.Navarathri is the famous annual festival of this temple. The ninth day celebration is symbolic with a grand procession of Durga similar to Mysore Dasara celebrations.

KADRI MANJUNATHA TEMPLE

Kadri Temple is one of the famous & beautiful temples in Mangaluru. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Manjunatha, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. It is one of the best places to visit in Mangalore.The original structure of the temple dates back to 10th century. However, the temple was convered to a stone structure in 14th century. The 1.6m tall statue of Lord Shiva made of bronze is placed in seated position with three faces and six arms.There is a natural spring on the backside of the temple, called as Gomukha. The water from this spring flows into 7 ponds of different sizes. Devotees come here and wash themselves before entering the main temple. The strange feature of this temple is that the temple tanks are placed at higher ground level compared to the central sanctum itself.

BEJAI MUSEUM

This museum is around 60 years old and its structure is shaped like a ship and has collections of some interesting pieces of art and artefacts.It is the museum whose collections link modern history with the 16th century. The museum has rich collections of ancient items which include paintings, metallic coins, stamps, statues, and inscriptions made out of copper.The museum is pretty big enough which is spread over a large area and is divided into sections to explore different categories of collections. The collection ranges from 200 years old to 500 years old which reflects the ancient culture and lifestyle of this place.

SULTHAN BATTERY

Sultan Battery is situated in Boloor, 4 km from Mangalore city. The place is known for the watchtower located amidst the beauty of nature, supposedly constructed by Emperor Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan built the tower 15 years before his death in 1784 AD. The place was previously known as Sultan’s Battery, the word battery meaning firing of canons. The place, built of black stones, was constructed to obstruct warships from entering the river, which was the major route for the English invasion but was then retrieved from the English by Tipu Sultan. Though the place holds the watchtower, it looks much like a fort with mounting places for canyons.

TANNIRBAVI BEACH

Tannirbavi Beach is located towards the southern end of Mangalore Port. The beach is the property of Mangalore port trust. This is one of the best beaches of Mangalore and among the top Mangalore tourist places.The soft sands of the beach and breezy winds of Arabian Sea offer memorable experience. It is also a favorite spot to watch the sunset. You can see the remains of a ship which sank 15 years ago near the beach. This beach is comparatively deserted and is a great spot for safe swimming.

KOLLUR MOOKAMBIKA TEMPLE

Built in Dravidian style, the temple is believed to be 1200 years old. The temple has received several enhancements during Keladi Nayakas period (15th / 16th century). The temple was also renovated in recent times. The quadrangular sanctum of the temple has a beautiful Vimana. The temple comprises of a large 135 feet long mandapa adorned with beautiful carvings of the deities. The beautiful sculptures of Ganesha, Subrahmanya, Naga, Mahishasura Mardini, Partheeshwara, Chandramouleeshwara, Pranalingeshwara, Nanjundeshwara, Anjaneya, Venkataramana, Thulasi Gopalakrishna are present in this temple. There is also an excellent sculpture of Panchamukha Ganesha. A huge deepasthambam (lamp pole) stands tall in the temple premises with 21 concentric circles.

MURUDESHWAR TEMPLE

This temple is situated on a small hill called Kanduka Giri, bounded by the sea on three sides. The temple built with Chalukya and Kadamba sculptures in the Dravidian style. The temple is mainly built of granite. It has a 20-storey high Gopura guarded by two life-size concrete elephants at the steps leading into the temple. The tower is 249 feet tall and is considered the tallest Gopura in the world. The entire temple and temple complex, including the 249 feet tall Raja Gopura were constructed to its present form by businessman and philanthropist Mr.R.N. Shetty. The Murudeswar Temple is entirely modernized, with the exception of the sanctum sanctorum, which is still retains its original structure. In the sanctum, Lord Shiva graces in the form of Linga, 2 feet below the ground.

The statue of Lord Shiva is the second biggest statue of Lord Shiva in the world after the statue in Nepal. The 123 feet (37m) huge towering statue of Lord Shiva is surrounded by the Arabian Sea is the major attraction of Murudeshwar town along with famous Murudeshwar Temple. It is one of the top places to visit in Murudeshwar.The statue was built by Shivamogga’s Kashinath and several other sculptors, financed by businessman Mr R.N. Gokarna is a ancient temple town and center for Sanskrit studies. It is located in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka State. Gokarna means ” Cow’s Ear “- It is believed that Lord Shiva has emerged from the ear of a cow. This town lies between the rivers Gangavali and Agnashini and situated along the Karwar coast by the Arabian Sea.Gokarna is also mentioned in Shrimad Bhagawat Purana. This Shivitiestemple town is also called Kashi of the South.

MIRJAN FORT

The Mirjan Fort has rich history and there are many versions on the origin of the fort. According to one version, the fort was built in 16th century by Chennabhairav Devi, Queen of Gersoppa, a subordinate of Vijayanagar kings. Rani Chennabhairav Devi was also known as the Pepper Queen. Her reign was one of the longest in the history of female domination in Indian history, from 1552 – 1606. The strong hold of her territory was centered on North and South Kanara districts and south Goa. After the battle of Tallikota in 1565, the territory was attacked by Bijapur Sultans. She shifted the base from Mirjan Fort to a safe location in an island in the middle of the Sharavathi River. She then converted to Jainism and constructed many Jain basadis. In 1757, the Marathas gained control of the fort and later in 1784 it was seized by the British.

OM BEACH

Om Beach is the most famous beach in Gokarna. Two semi-crescent shapes that join together resembling the Hindu religious symbol of Om. This beach got its name because of its shape.Om Beach is further along the coast from Kudle Beach. It can be reached by auto, with a downhill walk from there. This beach is usually visited by several foreign tourists as well. The curve of the symbol forms a pool which can be a safe bathing area for even non-swimmers.The beach is well maintained and there are commercial establishments like restaurants and resorts in close vicinity. In the rainy season there are very limited options for boarding and lodging. This beach currently does not have beach rules and is open to camping and bonfires on the beach.

SRI MAHABALESHWAR TEMPLE

According to the legend, Ravana performed a severe penance to Lord Shiva to possess his powerful Atmalinga. Pleased by his penance, Shiva gives him the Atmalinga. He had been instructed by Lord Shiva not to keep the Atmalinga on the ground, since it would be fixed wherever it touched ground. Ravana was stopped here for his evening prayers while going back to Lanka. In order to avoid Ravana misusing the Atmalinga, Lord Ganesh was sent by devatas in the avatar of a boy offered to hold the Atmalinga and then keep it on the ground. Eventually, the Aatmalinga was installed at Gokarna. In spite of Ravana trying hard with mighty power or Maha Bala, the Shivalingam stayed here fixed in the place. Ravana, in extreme anger, tried to pull out the Atmalinga from the ground, breaking it in the process. These pieces then resulted in the establishment of various temples in Karnataka.

GOKARNA BEACH

Gokarna Beach is also known as Main Beach and is also known as Indian Beach. Gokarna Beach is the closest beach to Gokarna town.It is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Gokarna. This beach is mainly used by Indian pilgrims because it is located right behind the Mahabaleshwar Temple. As per the religious customs, pilgrims usually visit the temple after a dip in the waters of this beach (not mandatory though).It is a long open beach and also known for surfing. Tourists can enjoy the view of the rocky mountains on one side and Arabian Sea on the other, while reaching Gokarna Beach. The Gangavalli river meets the sea near the beach. This part of the Arabian Sea is little aggressive and swimming here is not recommended.

The Krishna temple was founded by the Vaishnavite saint Shri Madhvacharya in the 13th century. ST. MARY’S ISLAND

St. Mary’s Island is a group of small beautiful islands to the north of Malpe Beach near Udupi. It is said that Vasco da Gama first reached this Island before reaching the Kappad Beach (near Calicut) while finding sea route to India.The island has two beautiful beaches and crystallized basalt rock formations. The unique rock formations scattered through out the island giving a special landscape to the place. The rock formations are one of rarely found in the world. Eastern beach boasts of virgin sands, western beach is entirely made of sea shells. This unspoiled island is a very beautiful place with white sands, coconut trees, blue waters & pleasant atmosphere.

Malpe Beach spread between Swarna Nandi River and Malpe Port is one of the finest beaches in Karnataka.Malpe is one of the most important ports of Karnataka.
