Wayanad is situated at a height of 700 to 2100m above sea level and is home to many species of animal and plant life. Temperatures range from 12 to 25 degrees centigrade. THOLPETTY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: Lying towards the north of the district of Wayanad, this region harbours a rich diversity of flora. Open to wildlife jeep safari twice a day, you are bound to spot various animals and bird species in their natural habitat during the 1.5-2 hour journey. A lake where animals come down for a drink is a major attraction here.Frequent sightings of elephant herds, deers, big cats, panthers, tigers, langurs, bonnet macaques, bison, sambar deer, malabar squirrels, bears and the rare Slender Loris have all been reported in these forests.

KURUVA ISLAND: Kuruva Islands or the Kuruva Dweep is popular among tourists for its calm and serene surroundings. Spread over 950acres of land, it takes a minimum of 3 hours to explore this uninhabited island. Located in the middle of the Kabani River, it houses a vast array of rare flora and fauna.The islands entry point is operated by DTPC, Wayanad at Palvelicham near Mananthavady There are bamboo rafts at both the entry points to take tourists to the island.

THIRUNELLI TEMPLE: The name Thirunelli derives from the word nelli, the Malayalam/Tamil equivalent for Indian gooseberry (Amla) tree. Once when Lord Brahma while traversing the world, saw an idol of Lord Vishnu resting on an amla tree in the valley and thus the place came to be named Thirunelli. In Padma Purana (written by Veda Vyasa) there is mention of a beautiful Vishnu temple located in the picturesque Sahya valley deep in the middle of the forest. Thirunelli temple is also referred to as Amalaka temple and Sidha temple.

PAKSHIPATHALAM BIRD SANCTUARY: Wayanad is one stop address for every trekker. One such spot in Wayanad that has captured the mindset of every tracker, ornithologists and nature lovers is the Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary. Here virgin forests, streams and steep hills together offer challenging avenues for trekking. 3 hours trekking is probably the best way to traverse through the rustic landscapes of the bird sanctuary. Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is best known for the presence of `Edible Nest Swift light.’ It is believed that the nest is made of solidified saliva and is used to make bird’s nest soup.
