VATTAKOTTAI FORT

It has been restored and developed as a tourist attraction.

SUCHINDRAM TEMPLE

Once arriving in the village of Suchindram, 14 kms. from the town of Kanniyakumari, devotees and visitors walk up a commercial corridor that leads to the temple complex. A large temple tank spreads out to the right, with the towering gopuram ahead. 134 feet in height, the seven-storied construction is an excellent example of classic South Indian temple architecture. The (usually) unpainted stone gopuram is intricately and amazingly carved into thousands of high relief, exquisitely rendered images of deities, transcendental pastime scenes, and various 9th century inscriptions. The play of light on the multi-faceted gopuram makes it a brilliant and beautiful structure.

VIVEKANANDA ROCK

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial was built in the memory of India’s one of the greatest saint and leader Swami Vivekananda. It is the place where he has meditated. Swami Vivekananda has arrived to Kanyakumari in 1892 and has meditated on this rock for two days. This was a few days before his departure for Chicago to attend World Religious Conference. It is said that at this place, Goddess Parvati has blessed Swami, who was an ardent devotee of Goddess Durga, and initiated his understanding of India, its glory and on the way to elevate it.It is a square hall with various sections namely Garbha Graham which is the Sanctum Sanctorum, Inner Prakaram, Outer Prakaram and Outer Platform around the hall.

THIRUVALLUVAR STATUE

Standing on a 38 feet high pedestal, the gigantic statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar is another popular attraction of a Kanyakumari tour. This statue was built by the Tamil Nadu Government, in the honor of Saint Thiruvalluvar who is undeniably one of the greatest Tamil poets and philosophers.Alluring every visitor with its immaculate sculpting, this stone sculpture has been built on 38 foot long pedestal to symbolize 38 chapters of virtue in the Thirukkural. Saint Thiruvalluvar Statue is around 133 feet long when combined with the height of pedestal. The height of 133 feet is also symbolic of the 133 chapters in Thirukkural. Thirukkural, along with many great creations, was written by Saint Thiruvalluvar. The statue is symbolic of various great verses and teaching of this ancient classic of Sangam Literature.

CHITHARAL JAIN ROCK CUT TEMPLE

Chitharal is located about 45 kilometers away from kanniyakumari. It is famous for the Rock-cut temple. Hillock at Chitharal has a cave containing Rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendent deities carved inside and outside dating back to 9th Century A.D. King Mahendra Varman I was responsible for the Jainism influence in this region. It was converted into Bagavathy Temple in the 13th Century A.D. Cars and Vans can go upto the foot of the hill. One has to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the temple. The Jain images have been preserved by the Central Archeological Survey of India. It comes under Vellankode panchayat.

THRIPARAPPU FALLS

The Kodayar River makes its descent at Thiruparappu. The water fall at this place is about 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from Pechiparai Dam. It is just a 15 min drive from the waterfalls.The river bed is rocky and about 300 feet (91 m) in length. The water falls from a height of nearly 50 feet (15 m) and the water flows for about seven months per year. The whole bed above the falls is one rocky mass which extends 250 metres (820 ft) upstream where the Thirparappu weir has been constructed for supplying water to the paddy fields.On either side of the river, on the left bank of the river in between the waterfalls and the weir, there is a temple dedicated to Shiva enclosed by strong fortification. The District Administration has recently constructed a swimming pool which is very popular among the children.

PADMANABHAPURAM PALACE

An ancient palace with mesmerizing architecture, Padmanabhapuram Palace is a fine example of excellence of art and craftsmanship. This wooden palace, built in 16th century is sure to allure every visitor with its unparalleled beauty. Located at the foothills of Veli Hills, a part of Western Ghats in Thuckalay, this palace was built by Ravipillai Ravivarma Kulasekhara Perumal of Travancore Kingdom.Named after the lotus that comes out of the navel of Lord Vishnu, (Padma means lotus, nabha-navel, puram- town), Padmanabhapuram Palace used to be seat of power of erstwhile kingdom of Travancore from the 16th to the late 18th Century, which later shifted to Thiruvananthapuram. MATHOOR HANGING BRIDGE

Mathoor Hanging Bridge was constructed in the year of 1966. The credit of constructing this bridge goes to late Thiru. K. Kamaraj, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state.Across the river Pahrali, this bridge was built with a total cost of around 13 lakhs. It was built primarily to serve the irrigation requirements of Vilavancode and Kalkulam Taluks. There is a channel on the bridge that transfers water for irrigation from one side of the hill to other side. This trough is around 7 feet high with a width of 6 inches and is supported by 28 pillars.Mathur Hanging Bridge is easily accessible. It is located at a distance of around 60 km from Kanyakumari. It is near to other destinations as well such as 70 km from Trivandrum and just 10 km away from Thuckalay. From the town of Thiruvattar, Mathoor hanging bridge is only 3 km away.
