About Munnar

Munnar got its name from its strategic location at the confluence of three rivers – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala Rivers. ‘Moonu’ means ‘three’ and ‘Aru’ means ‘river’. The region is placed at a height of around 1,500 m to 2,695 m above sea level and was once the summer capital of the British in South India. Later it was developed for cultivating tea plants. The beautiful sights of acres and acres of lush green tea plantations will make us realize that we have at last reached Munnar and of course the place is so much known for its tea estates. It always carries the remnants of history of tea cultivation in Kerala. Neelakurinji or Strobilanthus has special status in the tourism map of this fascinating destination. The flower which blooms once in twelve years attracts lots of tourists from all over the world.

ROSE GARDEN

Munnar Rose Garden is a beautiful garden with hundreds of rare varieties of flowers and herbal plants. With large tea plantations in the background, this place can be visited during a trip to Munnar. The garden is operated by Kerala Forest Development Centre (KFDC), a Govt. of Kerala undertaking. Spread across a few acres of land, this place has an amenity center for tourists and a sales outlet, in addition to hundreds of rare varieties of flowers, cactus, shrubs, creepers and herbal plants. The amenity center inside the garden has toilets, shop, snacks, coffee etc.

ECHO POINT

We all love places and experiences where we can reconnect with the child inside us. The childlike enthusiasm with which all our guests yell to their hearts content at this wonderful location is a truly endearing sight.About 15 km from Munnar lies the famous Echo Point. Popular for its natural echo phenomenon, one can always see the area full of eager visitors throughout the year. At an altitude of about 600 ft, people love taking a walk in the lush greenery surrounding the place. It is an ideal picnic spot.

PHOTO POINT

At a distance of 4 km from Munnar Bus Station, Photo Point is a beautiful spot on Mattupetty road lined up with tea gardens on both sides. As the name suggests, this place is a famous photography point in Munnar due to its breathtaking background of mountains surrounded by lush green tea gardens. Photo Point is one of the best tourist places to visit in Munnar.The tea gardens are owned by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations Limited owned by Tata Group and it is a private property. Visitors can take photographs at the entrance of garden without disturbing the plantations.This place is situated on the main road with running traffic and tourists are advised to be careful while taking pictures standing close to the road.

MATTUPETTY DAM

Mattupetty is among the most visited destinations in the tourist hotbed of Munnar. It is a beautiful picnic spot that regularly attracts visitors. People love visiting the dam and lake here and families can regularly be seen enjoying a fine afternoon in the area. The view of the valley from here is breath-taking and one gets to simply relax and enjoy the beautiful weather.The lush green tea plantations and forests in and around Mattupetty are ideal for trekking and host a large number of unique bird species. The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Idukki provides boating facilities at Mattupetty Dam that are loved by all our visitors.

ATUKKAD WATER FALLS

Situated amid the lush green forests, Atukkad Waterfalls is a major attraction in Munnar district of Kerala. Blossom Park Munnar is located around 3 km from the Munnar Town. This is near Pallivasal Hydro Electric Project , towards the old Munnar and on the way to Kochi.Blossom park is near the banks of River Muthirappuzha and the misty Kannan Devan Hill Tea Estates with green tea gardens. This colorful park has beautiful flowers incuding orchids and rich greenery. Mountain butterflies, artificer waterfalls and a river in the middle also adds to the beauty of the park .

ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK

Munnar is among the crown jewels of God’s Own Country and has attracted visitors from around the world for centuries due to its natural splendour. Hidden inside, lies the famous Eravikulam National Park, the home and sanctuary of the Nilgiri Tahr. This sacred haven for this exotic animal is a relief in a time when different species are disappearing off the face of the planet. Situated in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district, people also flock to this park to view the special Neelakurinji flowers that bloom once every 12 years. The next sighting is expected to be in 2018.

POTHAMEDU VIEW POINT

Experience the amazing sights of Munnar! Take a trip to Pothamedu, a hill top site where you can enjoy fine views of the surrounding mist-clad hills and green valleys in the caress of cool winds. For those who love a quiet walk, the vast plantations here would give you a nice ambience. Pothamedu has large plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom.This is also a trekking site where you can explore the hills without breaking into a sweat. Pothamedu is about 6 km away from Munnar town.
