ST. PHILOMENA CHURCH

Shivanasamudra, or Shiva Samudram, is a popular picnic spot situated in the Mandya District of Karnataka. Shivanasamudra, which literally stands for ‘Shiva’s Sea’, is a quaint island town situated on the River Cauvery.It is a famous tourist destination known for its waterfalls. It is listed among the top 100 waterfalls in the world. The River Cauvery, on its course through the rocky beds and ravines of the Deccan Plateau, gets split into two streams – Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, on reaching Shivanasamudra.Shivanasamudra is an ancient town known for its ancient temples and it is also home to Asia’s first hydro-electric power station, which was constructed to meet the demand of electricity for the gold mines of Kolar.

SHIVANASAMUDRA FALLS
Located at a distance of just 85 km from Mysore, the Shivanasamudra falls is a combination of two different falls on River Cauvery, which are divided by the island town of Shivanasamudra falls. The sight of cascading waterfalls, surrounded by greenery and rocks is simply breathtaking. On one side is the Bharachukki Falls, and on the other side is the Gaganachukki falls, with a shape like a huge horsetail. SOMNATHPUR TEMPLE
The Somnathpur temple is famous for its elaborate and intricate sculptures.The most characteristic feature of this temple is its 16 different ceilings, each depicting a different stage of a blooming plantain (banana flower). Small and large pieces of finely carved stone chips are set in complicated patterns. One of the main highlights of this temple is the central wall space. There are images of deities decorated with heavy jewellery, bangles on every arm, towering crowns and chunky anklets. The vimana over the sanctums have greatly carved images of gods.
TALAKADU TEMPLE
Talakadu, a city that once sported five popular Shiva temples, was ruled by the Ganges and then by the Cholas.The city is known for its five temples, namely the Vaidyanatheshwara, Pathaleshwara, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara and Mallikarjuna temples. All these temples tend to get buried under sand every year, but efforts are now constantly on to keep these open. The region also has a Keerthi Natheshwara Temple, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu that stands amongst the five Shiva temples, and this is now being reconstructed.
MUDUKUTHORE MALLIKARJUNA TEMPLE
The Mudukuthore Mallikarjuna Temple is located in The small Somagiri hill is just 200 ft high, and vehicles can go up half the way. From that point, you have to climb up a 100 steps to reach the Mallikarjuna Temple. Once you reach the top, you see two white Nandhis and then you enter a spacious courtyard with a tall Deepasthamba. The Main Sanctum houses a Shiva Linga, and it is a very important shrine as it is one of the five Panchalinga temples of Talakad. The walls of the temples are decorated with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from the epics.
