CHAMUNDI HILLS

 Chamundi Hills can be viewed from a distance of about 8 to 10 kms and from all the corners of Mysore City. Chamundeshwari temple is situated on the top of Chamundi hill which is about 3,489 ft. above sea level and located at a distance of 13 kms. from Mysore. The temple is dedicated to Sri Chamundeshwari, the titular deity of the Mysore Royal Family also described as ‘Mahishasura Mardini’ for having killed the buffalo headed demon Mahishasura. The temple has a very beautiful idol of the goddess wearing a garland of skulls. Goddess Chamundeshwari, also spelled Chamundeswari is an incarnation of Goddess Durga, Goddess Kali is also referred to as the Goddess Chamundi.

SAND MUSEUM

Sand sculptures are commonly crafted for a brief display on beaches. What I have done in Mysore is a permanent museum of sand sculptures, protected from the sun and rain,” the artist explained. A 15-ft high sand statue of a Lord Ganesh welcomes visitors to the museum. Other sculptures include Goddess Chamundeshwari, Laughing Buddha, Dasara procession, the late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar seated on the throne during Dasara, zodiac wheel, a striking work of ‘Gitopadesha’ with Lord Krishna and Arjuna on a horse-drawn chariot, ancient civilization, marine life, Disneyland, Islamic culture, a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and wildlife. Ms. Gowri explains: “I have entirely used only sand and water to craft the sculptures. I have also used glue in small proportions for sculpting vertical compositions.”

WAX MUSEUM (MELODY WORLD)

The Wax Museum at Mysore is aptly named as Melody World. The museum fascinates visitors through its display of various musical instruments in interesting settings, replete with life size wax statues of musicians playing the musical instruments. Since the museum is based on music and musical instruments it reflects the diverse kinds of musical instruments that have been in use across various parts of the country and the world since ancient times. This is a one-of-its kind wax museum in the whole world. The museum was established in October 2010 by a Bengaluru based IT professional named Shreeji Bhaskaran. It was created as a tribute to musicians from all over the world.

KARANJI LAKE

The Karanji Lake includes a walk through aviary for chirping birds, generating cheerfulness among visitors. This aviary is constructed on the banks of the lake has a length of 60mts, width of 40mts and 20mts height making it India’s biggest walk-through aviary. The birds are within handshaking distance. Karanji Lake has a butterfly park housing a large variety of plant species to attract butterflies. Karanji Lake also includes children corner and boating facilities. The high observation tower gives a grand view of greenery stretching all around. Karanji lake is owned and maintained by the Mysore Zoo Authority.

MYSORE ZOO

The Mysore zoo is over a century old and has an interesting history of its own. Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar had a vision to create a well laid-out city amidst the gardens, and founded the world famous Mysore Zoo in the year of 1892. The Mysore Zoo which has now spread over an area of 250 acres was initially meant for the exclusive visit of the royal family but public entry started as early as 1920. After India attained freedom, the Zoo was presented by the then Maharaja to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysore State Government.

MYSORE PALACE

Mysore Palace or the Mysore Maharaja Palace is located in the heart of the city. Mysore Palace is one of the most visited monuments in India. And its one of the largest palaces in the country, also known as Amba Vilas Palace, was the residence of the Wodeyar Maharaja’s of the Mysore state.The front of the Amba Vilas Palace has an open balcony supported by massive circular columns. The Royal portrait gallery, which is of historical importance, is a visual treat to the visitors. This three-storied structure has beautifully designed square towers at various cardinal points covered by domes. Craftsmen from Jaipur and Agra along with local workers were engaged in crafting them. The marriage pavilion or the Kalyana Mantapa with a center octagonal gabled roof, covered by stained glasses, is to the south of the building.

RAILWAY MUSEUM

One of the main features of the Mysore Railway Museum is the Chamundi Gallery where a number of black and white photographs and paintings have been displayed depicting the growth of railways in India. Steam engines including the first steam engine and signaling accessories from the beginning of the railways in India are interesting in their own right. A steam water pump of 1934 and a hand-operated crane of 1885 are also displayed. The museum has a battery-operated mini-train giving a short ride for children on the grounds.

JAGANMOHAN PALACE

The Jaganmohan Palace was built during rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III in 1861, as an alternate retreat for the royal family. The Mysore Palace, which was the original home of the royal family, was burnt down in a fire and the construction of a new palace in its place was started in the year 1897. The Royal family lived in this palace till the construction of the new Amba Vilas Mysore Palace in 1912. The installation of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV took place in a pavilion inside the Jaganmohan Palace in 1902. The early convocations of the Mysore University were also held in this palace. The first session of the Legislative Council of the Mysore state was held here in July 1907. The Legislative Council was then called as the Representative Council and was presided over by the Diwan.

ST. PHILOMENA’S CHURCH

The St. Philomena’s Church in Mysore is one of the oldest churches in India. It is over 200 years old. Initially over 250 years ago there was a small church in its place. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV laid the foundation of the new church on October 28th, 1933 that was to be built in the place of the small church built by his grandfather. A Frenchman named Daly designed the church. The floor plan of the cathedral is in the form of a cross. The long part of the cross is the ‘nave’, which is the congregation hall. The two arms of the cross are the ‘transepts’. The fourth part containing the altar and the choir is the ‘crossing’.

About Srirangapatna

According to history, Srirangapatna was founded by the rulers of Ganga dynasty in 9th century. However, the destination came into the limelight during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire. The rise of the Wodeyar kings marked the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire. During the reign of the Wodeyar kings, Raja Wodeyar conquered Rangaraya in 1610, who was then the viceroy of Srirangapatna. From 1610, the town of Srirangapattana was the capital of Mysore state. Hyder Ali defeated the Wodeyar King and made Srirangapatna their capital for a brief period. In the Battle of Srirangapatna in 1799, Tipu Sultan was killed inside the fort by the combined armies of Nizam of Hyderabad and the British. In addition, this battle also marked the last engagement of the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. Srirangapatna is among the must include place in your Mysore tour packages.

SRI RANGANATHASWAMY TEMPLE

According to the history, the sanctum of Lord Ranganatha is said to have been built in 817 AD by Ambi, a dancer. The temple was built by Thirumalaraya in 894 AD, a vassal of the Ganga dynasty. In early 12th century, Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana granted the village of Srirangapatna to the Vaishnava saint Ramanujacharya as an agraharam. During course of time, the temple has seen renovations and additions made by Hoyasalas, Vijayanagaras and Wodeyars of Mysore. This temple was also highly revered by Hider Ali and Tipu Sultan.

SRIRANGAPATNA FORT

There is a monument in the fort in the place where Tipu Sultan was killed. The architectural style of the fort is supposed to be Indo-Islamic and there is a Persian inscription on the gateway that announces its date of construction. There are two dungeons in the lower chambers of the fort that were used to imprison captured British officers. Tipu’s residence was also housed within the Fort.Srirangapatna Fort is situated in the town of Srirangapatna which was the capital of the Mysore state under the legendary king Tipu Sultan. It is a small island formed by the river Cauvery and its tributaries.

DARIA DAULAT BAGH / TIPPU SUMMER PALACE

The Daria Daulat Bagh palace is now converted in a museum housing several of Tippu’s memorabilia. First floor of the palace houses sketches, drawings and paintings along with block prints and Tipu’s clothes.The palace was made with teakwood in Indo-Saracenic style. The pillars, walls, canopies, arches and the corridors are graced with several murals. They depict scenes of warfare by Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan, the Nizams of Hyderabad, the British and French soldiers. The eastern wall has paintings representing the scenes of Darbars of different contemporaries of Tippu Sultan including the Hindu Rani of Chittor, the Raja of Tanjore, the Raja of Benares, Peshwas, etc.

SRI NIMISHAMBA TEMPLE

Sri Nimishamba Temple is located at Ganzaam on the banks of river Cauvery. There is a belief that Goddess Parvathi clears off all the troubles of her devotees within a minute here and that is why the goddess is called Nimishamba (Nimisha means one minute).According to legend, the Suryavamsha king Muktaraja had performed his penance in this place. Muktaraja got Srichakra carved on a stone and started performing poojas. It is currently kept in front of Nimishamba deity inside the temple. Mummadi Krishanaraja Wodeyar, king of Mysore, built the temple around 400 years ago.Varamahalakshmi festival and Durgashtami during Dussera are important festivals celebrated here.

GUMBAZ

Gumbaz is the Mausoleum of Tipu Sultan, his father Hider Ali and mother Fakr-Un-Nisa, situated at Srirangapatna. The Gumbaz was built by Tipu Sultan in 1782-1784 AD as the final resting place for his parents. Tipu was allowed to be buried here by the British, after his death in the Siege of in 1799.The importance of Gumbaz lies in its well-shaped large dome with ivory inlaid doors and carved stone windows of fine work and inscriptions. The doors of the tomb are beautifully carved and engraved with ivory works. The interior is painted in lacquer with the tiger stripe adopted by Tipu for military uniforms. The original carved doors of the mausoleum have been removed and are now displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The present door was gifted by Lord Dalhousie.

JUMMA MASJID

Jumma Masjid or Masjid-e-Ala is situated near the Gate of the Srirangapatna Fort. It was constructed by Tipu Sultan in 1784.It is a grand structure with two large octagonal minarets. The minarets stand on a high platform with an open court in the front. On the walls of the prayer hall, 99 names of Allah are inscribed. There are about 200 steps leading to the top of the minarets from where one can have a splendid view of the surrounding. The walls and ceilings of Masjid are well decorated with Persian scriptures and ornamentation.

RANGANATHITTU / BIRD SANCTUARY

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a small sanctuary spread across 67 sq.kms. It is one of the popular places to visit in Srirangapatna.The sanctuary comprises of six islets on the banks of the Kaveri River. It was declared in 1940 as a result of many requests from Dr Salim Ali who surveyed the birds in this area. Since then, the sanctuary has become a paradise for bird watchers. The sanctuary is a breeding ground for many migratory birds from all over the world. It is home to a wide species of birds including cormorants, darters, white ibis, spoon billed storks, open billed storks, painted storks, white necked storks, egrets, herons, terns, swallows, kingfishers, sandpiper etc.A boat ride takes you to the six islets crowded with a number of species of birds. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between June & October.

BRINDAVAN GARDEN / KRS DAM

The Brindavan Gardens, a celebrated beauty spot in this part of India is world famous for its symmetric design. It is one of the most beautifully laid out terrace gardens in the world. The creation of this garden in the Krishnaraja Sagar Dam site has been the achievement of Sir Mirza Ismail, the then Dewan of the princely State of Mysore. The beautification of the whole dam complex was conceived by Sir Mirza Ismail. Modeled on the design of the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir in the Mughal style, the garden is enriched with a number of terraces, parterres, fountains, running and cascading waterchannels, water chutes, lush green lawns, flower beds, shrubs and trees. Today, the Brindavan Gardens is world famous for its ethereal beauty, grandeur and illumination/ musical fountain.
