Ooty, is also known as “Udhagamandalam”. It’s been rightly titled as the as Queen of Hills. Ooty, the headquarters of The Nilgiris district is one of the famous hill stations in India. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above mean sea level. The word Nilgiris means Blue Mountains. It is a land of picturesque picnic spots and had been a popular summer and weekend getaway for the British during the colonial days. There are plenty of interesting tourist spots like Botanical Gardens, Lakes, Boat houses, water falls, shooting spots, Wildlife Sanctuary, Tea estates and many more.

BOTANICAL GARDEN

This botanical garden is basically divided into many sections. The total area which is covered by this garden is about 22hectares. Having a terraced layout, this garden is maintained by horticulture department of Tamil Nadu. The tourists are greeted with beautiful scenic views the garden offers due to the elevated placement.There are various types of ferns, flowers, and orchids which will suit your tastes. Many people from far and wide come here for research purpose. There are many rare species of ferns and trees. The various unique trees included are – The cork tree, Paperbark tree, and the monkey puzzle tree. The monkey puzzle tree got its name due to the fact that the monkeys fail to climb it!

WAX WORLD

The Wax World contains beautiful statues of Indian freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale among many others. The museum also has wonderful replicas of social figures like Mother Teresa and our former President, Dr.A.P.J.Adbul Kalam. Ooty hotels and Ooty restaurants are easily available near the museum for a quick bite before you carry on with your journey. The Wax World also has many replicas depicting the typical Indian way of life, especially in the villages. The whole setting of a village and people doing pottery and farming and so on all made entirely of wax is a wonderful site. Being a museum, there is no concept of best time to visit, other than when it is open!

DODDABETTA PEAK

This legendary peak located at 9.5 km from Ooty rises to 2637 meters above sea level and lies at the junction of the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. Doddabetta Peak is the fourth highest peak after the Anamudi, Mannamalai and Meesapulimala in South India. Doddabetta is the highest peak of the Nilgiris district and situated on the Ooty-Kotagiri road.The peak is also known for the medicinal plants and the rich vegetation of rhododendrons spread across the slopes of the mountain. Rhododendrons have medicinal properties that are used to make medicines and herbal tea. The flowers, leaves and bark of the trees are the major components used as medicines to cure numerous diseases.

TEA FACTORY

The Tea Factory is for the experience seeker in you, for the is more of a museum. It lets you take a walk in the factory, with CTC machines processing tea. A two storey building, it has tea leaves driers on the second floor, while the walls are splattered with the history of tea and the art of tea making via paintings and more.A guide will take you through the , often called as a museum too, in groups and impart knowledge of the whole process of and more. ROSE GARDEN

Awarded as the ‘Garden of Excellence’ by World Federation of Rose Societies, Rose Garden is one of the largest rose gardens in India. Located on the Elk Hill in Vijayanagaram of Ooty, the garden is a wonderland for nature lovers. You can have an enthralling view of more than 20,000 varieties of roses, collected from different parts of the world.Varieties include roses like Hybrid tea Roses, miniature rose, Floribunda, Ramblers, Yakimour and Polyanthas, which will leave you spellbound with their fragrance. Assembled in five curving terraces, the garden is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. Apart from colorful roses, the place is also popular for its angel statue.

OOTY LAKE {BOAT HOUSE}

The Ooty Lake is the pride of the Blue Hills. It is the central and strategic attraction. Mr. John Sullivan formed this artificial lake in the year 1824, the then Collector of Coimbatore. The Ooty lake which extends to an area of 65 acres. Earlier the entire lake was used for fishing. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation on behalf of the Tourism Department took the possession of the lake for pleasure boating facilities in the year 1973. Another added attraction of the Ooty lake is the Mini Train and an amusement park.

Pykara Lake, a popular getaway from Ooty, is a placid lake located between the lush green valleys of Ooty. Surrounded by dense forests, there is a forest rest house in the area. Additionally, Pykara is known for its boat house, which is near the Pykara falls and Dam. The boat house also includes a restaurant and a rest house, where tourists can relax.Tourists can visit the clean and beautiful Pykara Lake, which is free from pollution and is not very crowded. PYKARA WATERFALLS

Pykara Falls is formed by Pykara River on the downstream of the Pykara Dam. The falls drops down into two sections with height of 55 m and 61 m through multiple layers on the rocky bed providing a unique beauty to the stream. The dam, built on the Kamrajar Lake, is spread over 400 acres and is situated on the way to Wenlock Downs & Pykara. The dam is a monsoon fed water body and measures about 6 km in length. It is a popular shooting location in Ooty.Kamraj Sagar Dam, also known as the Sandynalla Reservoir, is a very quiet and scenic dam situated on the slopes of the Wenlock Downs in Ooty.

PINE FOREST

As you enter the Pine Forest near Ooty, you will notice these towering poles of Pine Trees dressed with thick and scaly features while a few are thin and feature flaking barks. The branches imitate a fake swirl that produces a very tight spiral twist with a tapered effect that looks like a ring of branches arising from one point. This spiral twist of growing branches, cone scales and needles shaped leaves are arranged in typical ratios of the Fibonacci number system, strange but true whereas the infant spring shoots, referred to as ‘candles’ are seen covered in off white and brownish bud scales. Initially these bud scales point upward but later transform into green leaves and spreads outward from the bark of the Pine Trees. These Candle-like spring shoots assist foresters to evaluate the soil fertility and well-being of the Pine Forest trees.

OOTY (TOY TRAIN)

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is a world heritage train which attracts numerous tourists travelling to Ooty. Nilgiri Mountain Railway commonly known as Toy train or Nilgiri passenger travels between Mettupalayam to Ooty daily and it covers a distance of 26 km and passes through 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. It almost takes around 4 to 5 hours to reach Ooty from Mettupalayam via toy train. The train starts from Mettupalayam railway station and passes through Hillgrove railway station, Coonoor railway station, Wellington railway station, Aruvankadu railway station, Ketti railway station, Lovedale railway station, and finally reaches Ooty also know as Udhagamandalam railway station.
