About Vijayawada

Vijayawada is a city in the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, on the banks of River Krishna in Krishna district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.The city is the third most densely populated in the urban population of built-up areas in the world and is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh by population.Vijayawada is classified as a Y-grade city as per the Sixth Central Pay Commission.Vijayawada is the commercial headquarters of Andhra Pradesh. It was recognised as a “Global City of the Future” by McKinsey Quarterly, which expected an increase to GDP of $17 billion by 2025.Vijayawada was ISO 37120 Platinum Level certified in October 2018 and has been added to the “Global Cities Registry”.

KANAKA DURGA TEMPLE

According to legend, goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasura and enshrined on the Keela Mountain with eight arms in the form of Mahishasura Mardini as she had given boon to Keela. Indra and all other gods worshipped the goddess Kanaka Durga on the hill which later known as Indrakeeladri. In Dwaapara Yuga, Arjuna did great penance on Indrakeeladri for Lord Shiva in order to get the most powerful Astra called Paashupataastra. Later, Lord Shiva appeared to fulfill the desire of Arjuna and called him as Vijaya (victorious). The place came to be known as Vijayawada after Arjuna’s victory.

BHANANI ISLAND

Bhavani island is one of the largest islands on a river and is located on the Krishna river at Vijayawada. The vast expanse of the island proves to be the perfect place for a relaxing weekend. If you are one for adventure sports and water slides, this is an exhilarating place to visit! It is named after the Goddess Bhavani or Kanaka Durga whose temple is on the Indrakeeladri hill close to the island. Bhavani island can be reached by boat from the banks of Krishna river. Approaching the island from the banks, you will enjoy the lush green surroundings and beauty of the Krishna river. If you are on the island especially during sunrise, you have the most spectacular view of the sunlight dancing on flowing waters of the river. It is a magical place for nature lovers.

PRAKASAM BARRAGE

The beautiful backwaters formed by the barrage give the city a unique setting with the backdrop of Kanakadurga Hill. The barrage was first built by Sir Arthur Cotton in 1855 and later reconstructed in the 1950s. This is one of the earliest major irrigation projects in Southern India. It was named after the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Tanguturi Prakasam. The scheme irrigates nearly one million hectors of land, converting the Krishna delta into a rich granary in Andhra Pradesh. This barrage also supplies water to Buckingham canal which was constructed as inland navigation canal initially but later used as irrigation water supply canal.

UNDAVALLI CAVES

The Undavalli Caves are ancient cave temples believed to be built between 4th and 5th centuries by Gupta dynasty. The caves are located on a hill overlooking the Krishna River. These caves have been carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside. The best known and largest one has four stories with a huge statue of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture sculpted from a single block of granite in the second floor. Other shrines inside the cave are dedicated to Trimurti- Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Main cave belongs to the earliest examples of Gupta architecture, primarily primitive rock-cut monastery cells carved into the sandstone hills. Initially caves were shaped as a Buddhist monastery and the first floor still retains style of Buddhist vihara, including some Buddhist sculptures. Facade of the third floor is adorned with numerous sculptures, including depictions of lions and elephants.

KONDAPALLI FORT

Situated on a hill, the fort has an impressive three storied rock tower protected by three levels of entries. The main entrance gate is known as the Dargah Darwaza, which has been made out of a single slab of granite. Another entrance gate of the fort is known as the Golconda Darwaza. The major attraction of the fort is the Tanisha Mahal or Palace, which is located on a crest between two hills. Near the fort there is a Dargah of a Persian Saint, Gareeb Sahib. One can still find several other ruined structures within the premises of the fort. There is a Gajasala, where elephants were kept, Queen’s palace, Virupaksha Temple, Dining hall, a reservoir and prisons.

SURYALANKA BEACH

Suryalanka Beach is the perfect weekend getaway beach to spend time with friends and families. The natural beauty of the beach is major draw for people, who are looking to refresh and rejuvenate themselves. The shore of the beach is wide and spacious. The Suryalanka Beach overlooks the crystal blue waters of the Bay of Bengal.This beach is quite safe for swimming and sunbathing is another popular activity. Sunrise is very beautiful at this beach. VODAREVU BEACH

AKKANNA & MADANNA CAVES

Akkanna & Madanna Caves are located at the foot of the Indrakeeladri Hill, on which the famous Kanaka Durga Temple is present.According to the records, these beautiful caves were brought to a shape by Akkanna and Madanna who were the ministers of Quli Qutb Shah, the Nawab of Golconda. However, some history records claim that these caves belong to 6th or 7th Century AD.The caves are triple-celled with pillared hall measuring 48 x 29 feet facing towards East. These are devoid of any ornamental moulding or sculpture.The caves can be visited while going to Kanaka Durga Temple.

VICTORIA MUSEUM

Victoria Museum is known to conserve huge collections of ancient sculptures, inscriptions, idols, paintings, cutlery and weapons. Victoria Museum also contains prehistoric stone tools, arms, gold and silver coins, pottery, manuscripts, Neolithic and Microlithic implements. The granite statue of Buddha and the white limestone figure of Buddha in standing position brought from Alluru are major attractions here. An example of sculptural excellence, the museum also contains an idol of Lord Shiva, dating back to 4th – 5th century. This idol is another prime attraction of the museum.

MANGALAGIRI LAKSHMI NARASIMHA TEMPLE

Mangalagiri in Guntur district is famous for Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple on the hill and Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple at foot of the hill.Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple – The idol is said to be Swambhu. The idol is covered by metal face and only the mouth is visible & it’s widely opened. The God takes jaggery water (Panakam) as offering. The water is poured into the mouth, only half of the water is consumed and remaining is thrown out.Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple ‘ Yudhishtira, the eldest of the pandavas is said to be the founder of the chief image of this temple and the deity here is called Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. The temple has a very tall 153 feet tower with beautiful sculpture which has 11 stairs. It was constructed by Raja Vasireddi Venkatadri Naidu, during the years 1807-09.

RAJIV GANDHI PARK

Rajiv Gandhi Park attracts the visitors with its impressive horticulture network. The wide variety of flower plants grown on the fertile soil brought from the banks of the River Krishna make this park truly attractive. The built-up structures of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals make this park an educative one as well.
